It seems that stores around my area only sell dvp5990, nobody has 5992. Also, Philips official website only lists 5990. The manual for 5990 doesn't specify which USB it has while someone on the forum in here posted about 5992 having usb 2.0. I mean, usb 1.1 is a thing of a distant past and I don't expect newer 5990 having anything less than 2.0, but still would like to confirm that. Also I assume 5990 will let me play movies from external HD without a problem.

Planning to buy mine from Best Buy since I read a number of comments where some of these players don't work out of the box or die after a few months. Is that typical?

    Thanks!

  2. The 5990's USB port is 2.0. The earlier 5960 had a USB 1.1 port. Yes, it will play movies from an external drive but it must be formatted FAT32.

I bought mine from Bust Buy Canada and it played out of the box just fine. I've had it under a month so I can't really add anything about them crapping out after a few months. As the other chappie said, the USB is 2.0, and the only difference I can see between the 5990 and the 5992 is that the latter is a silver box. In fact, my manual for the 5990 claims to be for both units.

  4. Philips players are sensitive to heat. Keep them in a cool spot -- not on top of a hot A/V receiver for instance.

  5. Thanks for the info, Jag. I've got mine on the bottom tier of my telly unit, and am thinking about taking the glass door off just to be safe. Not like it keeps the dust out anyway. :>

Thanks all for replies!!! Can't wait to get mine, just that its sold out and every Best Buy in my area has it on 2-week back order Can't wait to be able to run all the movies for my kids from HD instead of constantly loading DVDs.

Curious if I will be able to connect Buffalo Linkstaton NAS drive (already on network) through available spare USB port to this DVD player? This way I can keep movie library (and picture library) in sync through network.

Ya' got me there. I've not tried the external HD option. But a wireless HD on your existing network hooked-up to the standalone would sure be the cat's ass, wouldn't it?

I don't have this HD yet, just getting bits'n'pieces for my setup. Its a network shared HD (was looking at $250, 1TB linkstation live) that hooks up to your router directly through ethernet and can be accessed through the network. But since it has USB ports, I was wondering how cool would it be to link it to DVP5990 so you can watch any movies on your TV without a need for any fancy media center. I guess I will have to try it out myself and let you guys know about it
