Yes, you should update the firmware to the latest version for the most media support and any other refinements. You can get it here.

In addition to the programs you listed, you'll also need a burning program such as Nero, RecordNow Max, etc.

Use the guides here and elsewhere for DVDShrink and you'll be fine. Just make sure not to skimp on the media, alot of people's first problems can often be linked to the media they choose. Bottom line, Good media costs a little more, but it's worth it in the long run.

You don't really need to upgrade your firmware unless you're having prblems with certain media. If you need to you can get it here http://www.liteonit.com.tw/ODD/english/english-load-firmware.htm

Lite-on makes it easy to flash your firmware.
    It's a great drive, eh?

Don't forget to "FlashFix" if you plan on reverting back to previous firmware:
    FLASHFIX - http://digi.rpc1.org/flashfix.htm

[Lacywest comment ... error comment here is not my personal comment ... this is a copy and paste comment from other website]

    Hmmmm...
Just tried "FlashFix" v1.0.0.1 on FS0G and got "file not within specified size" error.
Notified the author and hopefully there will be a fix.

    Merry Christmas!
