  1. By no means am I a noobie on this site, but I am as far as HD stuff is concerned; my question is this: I have recently got a new HD Ready television and upscaling DVD Recorder. The picture quality of DVDs is not an issue as the picture is excellent but do upscaling devices upscale the picture for the broadcast signal (in this case Digital Freeview in the UK)?

Logically it does: if the output, of the recorder, is set to 1080p then the DVD Recorder is putting out everything as upscaled, which makes sense.

The picture quality seems better when watched through the DVD Recorder's receiver than the television's own. It's just I can't do a comparative as there is a lag between switching from devices and I just wanted this confirmed and it isn't my imagination.

    Thanks.

  2. Does your TV have a display function that will show you the format of the incoming signal? If it says 1080p, not 576i, then the DVD recorder is upscaling. If it says 576i the TV is upscaling.

Anything you watch through your upconverting DVDR will be upconverted(unless of course passthru coax). Jagabo's hint is a good one. Most TV's have the ability to display resolution somewhere in their options.

  4. I can't find (currently!) the setting to see what the format is on the televison. The television's native resolution isn't 1080 but it can accept 1080i and 1080p signals (its a Sony KDL-32D3000).

But thanks for the confirmation. As I said, it makes sense that it does upscale all and I am using an HDMI connection.
