I have a Pioneer DVR 105 dvd writer and used to burn dvd movies fine at 4 x speed but now i just get this annoying Power Calibration error that apears just before it starts burning.
At first i thought it was screwing up the discs and i just binned them but recently i thought i would try the same discs that had the power calibration error to write on it @ 2 x speed and it worked fine.
So now i have a 4 x dvdwriter that only writes @ 2 x which is a pain in the ass to say the least as i do lots of burning.
I have read many similar posts on this forum with the same problems but not really seen any that has an explaination as to why it happens or how to cure it.
I use Zero Defex, Datasafe, Traxdata and ritek silvertop discs but all have the same outcome.
Anyone who has figured out why this happens or how to fix it i would really welcome there words of wisdom.
Many Thanks

I've have the exact same problem with my Pioneer 105. Sometimes I could reboot the computer and be able to burn the same disc at 4X after the error. I thought it was cheap media, but then I brought a new Pioneer 106, and it was doing the same thing. Would love to find an answer.

The power calibration error is normally caused by poor media, the brands of disks that you have used are unfortunately known for causing these problems, can you please try your drive with a better quality DVD-R 4x disk, we recommend and support the use of DVD-R disks manufacturer and sold as Pioneer, TDK, Verbatim, Maxell, Apple, CMC, JVC, Sony and Panasonic.
Can you also tell me what firmware versions you have or have had on your drive, the attached software can be used to show you what firmware version you have on it now.

So there you have it ONLY buy the discs on that list and you should be fine I HOPE!!!! -
I was getting this error on my Sony DRU500A and finally fixed it by spraying some compressed air in the drive and using a cleaning disk. However, there seems to be a bit of disagreement on cleaning, so you should look through the forum first....
