  1. Here is my Questions (takes a deep breath)

    1. I want to buy a good DVD Burner I have narrowed it down to these models and why: ( around 200 )

    a. Plextor 708 ( I belive this is the one that writes X8 but only DVD +R ) is it really worth it?, Will i ever use DVDROM/RAM or what is it?
    b. Pioneer 106 ? ( Heard this one burns any media under the sun and then some Writes @ 4x)
    c. MSI DR8 ( burns 8X DVD + R like plextor..But have heard when u burn the DVD it will not play on a stand alone DVD player?? but works fine on Computer)
    d. Sony DRU510 ( Heard main issues is that its picky on what media it will burn)

    2. Should I order it from a site my DVD Burner? Or should i got to compusa or something like that?? Since at some stores you can buy ext warranty.

    3. From what I gather I should get a DVD player also so i can do a DVD Copy to DVD.. Like how you would copy CD TO CD. Also wich type should i get ? Anything I should look for like some special type of decoder suppported or not?

    4. My pc Specs:

    MSI MotherBoard p 4 2.5 ( intel Chipset )
    1 Gig Ram
    MSI Gforce 4 TI4200 (128 DDR RAM )
    Storage : 300 Gig Raid 0 ( two HD 150 ) ATA 7200 RPM

    5. Basically here is what I want to do . Copy DVD's and use DVD for back ups of Data files mp3 and etc.. Not sure if you can copy PS2 games or etc.. Rarely will want ps2 games copied more worried about DVD Movies and backup storage type of thing.

    Suggestion welcome

  2. I'd stick with the Pioneer of the Sony, in that order.

  4. Great then pioneer it is..Last Question buy it on line or at a local store. I heard price range is 115 to 150??? I really dont want to deal with the hastle of mailing to Manufactor X and etc.. I can walk in to a store and just get a replacment on the spot. Also Ill need a DVD Reader ( one that just plays DVD) what a good one???

    p.s

How often do drives go bad?

See how much it costs with shipping and compare that with what it costs with sales tax and decide if you want it now or can wait for it to be delivered. As far as warranties go, save your money. Having worked at the old Computer City, I know that extended warranties primarily benefit the store and not the consumer. Studies have shown that, at the most, one in four electronics purchases need out of warranty service. The money you save by not buying them should exceed the occasional repairs that are necessary.

Also, some stores, like Best Buy, regard any replacements or repairs under their extended warranties as being losses and can give you the runaround if you ever have a problem. Extended warranties are considered to be nearly pure profit, which is the main reason they push them so much.

Check out Costco. They allow returns at any time, except for computers, without having to pay extra for the privilege. Someone in their customer service explained it to me recently. They even accept returns for damage caused by lightning strikes, which is usually not covered by the other stores.....

  7. Another vote for the Pioneer. Being a self-proclaimed newbie, you'd probably be better off getting it locally. Great drive all around.

    Best of Luck,
