  1. I've been doing a lot of reading and there are so many methods of backing up a copy protected dvd that it will make your head spin. Personally, I've been using this three step process:

    DVD Decrypter
    DVD Shrink 3.0
    Nero 6.0

With most other technology type issues, it seems like the community eventually agrees on a best method which becomes more or less a standard. It seems like the DVD burning community is far from this.

So what is the best method?

It depends on what your favorite color is.

The ONLY BEST method is the one that suits your needs and purposes. Enough said. We will all agree to disagree on this one. You can just have a 2 step process...because DVD Shrink also decrypts DVDs and so you can cut out the DVD Decrypter step.

    Also agreed.

In order to define a "best method" we must first define the use of the word best. If by best you mean best quality with few other qualifiers then well CCE wins hands down given the several variants of using it (DVD2SVCD, DVD2DVDR, Big3) . If however your using best in a way that includes a qualifier for speed... well that opens up a never ending argument.

Moral? Just use what you like.

It was a joke though clearly not a very good and/or noticable one.

There is never a universal "best" for anything. Programs perform differently on different machines, some programs are cost prohibitive (for some of us), some programs will not perform at all on some machines.

Anything that gets the job done for you with acceptable quality vs. time involved is "best".

It is BEST to learn many different methods, especially for the reasons listed above. When my 1.5 Ghz machine died and I was forced to backup using an old 366Mhz-P-II my methods and acceptable levels of "time involved" changed drastically!

    DVD Decrypter

I'm sure it's awesome. It might even be freekin awesome. But is it needed in this process? DVD shrink decrypts so there is no need to decrypt first as far as I can see. It's ok if you want to use it just because your used to it but it's kind of silly to go around recomending a three step process if the first step is not needed. I'm not arguing with you I'm just asking you why you do it that way. Have you tried it without the first step?

  17. I also use DVD Decrypter as a ripper. DVD Shrink is only really useful as a shrinking / cropping tool. Then use Image tool classic to make an iso and any iso burning program (I use Ulead, but DVD Decrypter will work) to burn it.

  18. There are times when DVDShrink will not rip the DVD in question, at which point DVD Decrypter seems to work.

  19. just be thankful that you're able to backup a dvd as i'm reading some of these postings about software or hardware conflicts with their computers when backing up a dvd..if it ain't broke..don't fix it.

  20. I rip with DVD Decrypter first because I can quickly rip a bunch of movies to my hard drive and deal with shrinking or splitting them later. Its easy and quick.

  21. I'm curious, why use Image Tool Classic and then DVD Decrypter instead of something like Nero that burns in one step?

  22. gobble

I use Imagetool Classic and DVDDecrypter to burn...because I have found out that it gives me the best compatibility with all my DVD Players.

The primary use of DVDDecryptor in conjunction with DVDShrink is to get all 4 of your NETFLIX in the mail before the last postoffice pickup today.........

Or a disk is scratched. Or your too stupid to notice the guide says DVDShrink 2.3, but the application says DVDShrink 3.0.5b

That's at least the second time you've advocated copying movies rented from Netflix. Hopefully the mods see this...

  26. It does depend on your individual needs, the speed of your computer, and other factors, and it's up to you what you're comfortable with. But I think everybody would agree with me when I say that the most common programs are DVD Shrink, Nero, DVD Decrypter and Nero Recode.

  28. I just scanned quickly thru these posts. I didnt see dvdxcopy. Maybe it was there and i missed it, i dunno. I use dvdxcopy platinum (advanced mode) for movies and dvd decrypter for games. The only reason i use dvdxcopy is because it does the dvd9 to dvd5 in one program. Plus i know how to remove the opening backup warning created by the program. But again like most people have said, whatever works for you, then stick with it.
