I want to conveert an avi file to dvd and I was going to use doom9.org guide (http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvd2svcd-avi.htm) but I need something called Sonic Scenarist which is payware. Is there any other way to do this using shareware programs?

Have a look at the guides over on the left - there are dozens of ways of doing this.
Much of the software you'll need is available as trialware - e.g. TMPGEnc Plus and TMPGEnc DVD Author.
There's not much in the way of freeware to make DVD's at the moment - if you want to do it all with free software, you may want to have a look at making (S)VCD's instead.
If your source is an avi, you may well find that a good (S)VCD is fine; the extra quality of a DVD might be wasted if the source is as highly compressed as a 1-CD avi movie.
cheers,
mcdruid.
