Does it play 4:3 on your PC or is the problem only on a stand-alone DVD player?
-
Are you in the U.S. (NTSC) or in a PAL standard location. Is the DVD PAL or NTSC ? I'm a little perpleaxed, as you say it is not displaying correctly on your PC either.
-
If this is widescreen avi then you have to select 16:9(borders added, encoded as 4:3).Sometimes you have to select that with certain dvd`s once in awhile.
-
But I donīt wanīt any borders at all (and this option puts borders on the encoded film, doesnīt it?), I donīt have a widescreen TV!
-
If the original source is wide screen then borders have to be added or you will lose some of your viewing area on the sides that you have described.

I'll defer to someone more expert in this area. You may try johns0 recommendation, although you do state in your 1st post that the DVD is in 4:3 format and not widescreen.
Sorry! -
Just to clarify ...
1. You are in a PAL country with PAL equipment?
2. This is a PAL DVD?
3. The DVD is 4:3 aspect ratio?
Is there any possibility this could be a NTSC-based DVD? -
what you can do is open tmpgenc after you stop dvd2svcd from going into the video encode mode and set the video arrange method to full screen(keep aspect ratio) or clip frame amd set the video cropping manually to what looks proper and start encoding with tmpgenc cause it should have the avs script load into it already.after this finishes then you can multiplex the m2v and mp2 files with mpeg tools in tmpgenc.

Not strange, just manually change the settings like i described.
