  1. Hi all,

I have just tried converting my first SVCD onto a DVD disk. The SVCD was NTSC, 480x480 with 44.1K audio.

I followed the guide and using ISObuster, extracted the mpg's.

I then did a simple demux, converted the audio to 48K and muliplexed back the mpg. All using TMPG.

I previewed the mpg's on the PC all looked fine, no sync issue etc.

Used DVD Patcher to change res from 480 to 352. Previewed again, all ok.

Loaded Ulead Moviestudio 2 and created a dvd project. Loaded the 3 mpg's and clicked for the first one to play first. Didnt bother with a menu.

When I clicked burn it said multiplexing which I thought odd, as the mpg's were correctly 48k and the res had been patched for the entire file. I let it run though as I have never used the software until now.

Tried the DVD on 3 dvd players and it plays choppy on them all, does anyone know any possible reasons for this ?

When I play the DVD on the PC, It plays ok but is a little blocky.

Sorry about the length of this post, but I wanted to try and get all the relevant details in.

    Thanks in advance.

  2. Just bought some DVD-RW's so I can carry trying to get this working with out burning any more DVD-R coasters.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone with any advise on creating DVD from SVCD, even using a different method from the one I used above.

    Regards,
    Mike

  4. Hi bugster

Yes I tried that but it got to the part where it says "patching files" and it would hang. I found similar problem here and another couple of threads but found no real answer.

Im going to try a different authoring application as I think there is something sus with Ulead, I cant understand why it said multiplexing files before it started burning.

Let you know how I get on with Nero.

Thats normal behaviour for any authoring app. If you supply an mpeg program stream (audio and video in one file) it has to de-mux, then re-mux into VOB file format. Thats what its doing when it says multiplexing.

What is the framerate of the SVCD?

  6. Hi Mike

I tried the same process as you did. But I didn't see the problems you had. My SVCD source are also NTSC 480x480, 44K.
The only thing you didn't mention is: when you use DVD patcher, in the vertical block, what did you select? I use x480 NTSC. The picture in the Ulead preview is not out of the screen. I think this is because the original is 480x480, now is 352x480.
The problem I got is that when I play the DVD I burned using WinDVD. My windvd crashed each time play the DVD. I still have the problem.

Another problem is tricky. When I first put it into my DVD player, the menu created by Ulead is fine. But when I select one of them to play, the picture is confused. I don't know what's wrong so I did the process again, same problem. I almost gave up this method until I tried to 4x fast forward, the pictures recovered to my TV screen size!!! cristalll clear. So now when I play, I 4x forward first, then play. Only more than 4x forward can rectify the picture. 2x doesn't work. I don't know why. I try the same disk on another brand player, no lucky this time.

Easiest and fastest way to try something different that works "most" of the time is to use DVD Lab (www.mediachance.com). Just D/L the 18mb vs 1.31 demo which is full function for 30days. Here's how:

    1. In ISO Buster, rip the svcd mpg2's using right click popup menu "extract, but filter mpg2 frames". This way you will have a native mpg2 file without the RIFF Headers or any other stuff that happened to the svcd mpg2 file when the svcd was made. Does it on the fly so no need to use any other program on the mpg2.

    2. Open DVD Lab and drag or manually add the mpg2 files (I'm assuming you had at least svcd cdr's if it was a movie backup, so one mpg2 from each cd). Let the program demux the mpg into elementary audio/video files if it asks, and let it transcode audio if asked. Then drag the video file and the audio file into the right sections of the window you opened for movie 1. Your're done. If you have another mpg2, say part two of a movie that you had on svcd, then just "add" another movie2 and insert the audio/video files to that movie. Add as many movies as you'd like, then double click on "connections" in the upper left panes. Right click on movie one and select drag connection and just use the mouse to drag from movie1 to movie2...that way movie2 will start immediately after movie one finishes! You can use the connection wizard if that's easier. Make menus with any still image, with linking buttons and motion background and motion thumbnails, etc if you're into it, or just hit compile and select output VIDEO_TS folder. When it's done, burn folder using recordnow max or nero 5.5+ or nero 6+,etc. DVD Lab will do the job of dvd patch during the compile automatically, and since it transcodes the audio to 48 (dvd spec) from 44 (svcd spec), it's a nice little solution to converting svcd's to dvd, and by the way you won't find a more powerful but easy to use menu creation/dvd authoring program out there.

If that doesn't work, then your only true option for perfect results is to spend the time to re-encode the mpg2 files to dvd compliant mpg2 files first, then import them as multiplexed or demuxed into any authoring program and they will work fine and your output will work fine and set top boxes. You can use TMPGEnc or CCE. TMPPGEnc will load the mpg2 file no problem if you have the right plugins and setup. CCE only takes avi, so you'll use dvd2avi to make a dv2 file of the mpg2's, then use vfapi converter to make an avi file from the dv2 file, then you can load that avi file in CCE. email me offline with questions! good luck, and remember, you can always convert files to make a project work!

    3. In the upper left window dobule click on movie1. Now just drag
