  1. In your opinion what is the best capture program(s) with the best results?

  2. From my many trial and errors including capturing from analogue (tv, vhs, 8mm) I have found virtualdub with a lossless codec such as huffyuv or mjpeg produces far better results than any other method I have tried.

    But it all depends on what your doing with the capture.

    For MPEG-2 real time :

    Ulead Video Studio 7 is great, shame it doesn't have a scheduler. There's a way to view the frame counter on it.

    WinDVR3 is nice as well, includes a scheduler, but no frame counter (no big problem).

    I have just made a try with WinDVD Recorder, but had a problem with its scheduler, I am investigating;

    You should get a program that capture video as MPEG-2, and audio as LPCM, cause it's very likely you will edit it later (normalize, for example).

    Otherwise, get a program that capture audio as AC3 - WinDVD Recorder (but I have just had a problem....);

    I had too many annoying problems with ATIMMC, it doesn't capture audio as LPCM or AC3 with video as MPEG-2, avoid it (it's free though);

    If you use an ATI card, ATI MMC.
    If another card, look at what came with the card.

    If those are not to your liking, or you cannot figure them out, or if they plain don't work ... all of which can be true ... then try these:
    -VirtualDub
    -iuVCR
    -Virtual VCR

    some people also have good luck with the all-in-one programs:
    -DVD Workshop
    -NeoDVD

    I would entirely avoid PowerVCR and WinDVR and WinDVD Recorder due to numerous technical and quality issues.

    If none of this works ... sorry, but I'm voting on user error or hardware failure.

    Good luck and hope you find something that works.

    If you can get vdub to work on your system (remember, it's VFW only)
    this is what I would recommend cause it's got more settings and better
    options to control/add colorspace/codec tweaking plus a few other tid-bits.

    AVI_IO is another one. But, its not so feature-rich as vdub above. But,
    I use it extensively (when I'm not DV'ing around) w/ my Analog cards, on
    my 2nd pc, because of my setup and fine-tuning tweaks, I can capture w/
    out any framedrops.

    Mind you, I'm still tweaking vdub though, till I can find it working as good
    as AVI_IO or better, but until then.. I mostly mess around or too envolved
    to devote much time to this (old) issue, busying myself w/ my ADVC-100
    and projects. But, when time allows or I get bored, I mess around w/ the
    above issue to shoot for that final end result
    .
    .
    and just before it's asked, I use DVIO w/ my ADVC-100 on my Windows 98
    system. sure I have the 4 gig (or 18 minute) limit, but that hasn't stopped
    me from my projects if you know how to handle 18 minutes

    First try Virtualdub. If it works, then stick with it!
    If not, try virtualvcr. A good program, freeware, has a schedguler plug in.

    If you wish realtime mpeg 2, my first choice is WinDVR 3.0 . Works great on anything except ATI. If you have ATI use ATI MMC. I don't like powerVCR 3, others love it.

    If anything fails, then try iuVCR which is not freeware, but fair cheap.

    Also, Descaler does a great avi capture, but you need a PC with plenty CPU power, more than 2Ghz at least to use it. This amazing program can handle exotic stuff, like Pal60, NTSC50, or all the variations of PAL/NTSC that exist.

  11. ScenalyzerLIVE is the best. You set the video running with the sensitivity level and let it go. hours later, different segment of recording are captured in separate files. Beats trying to time code each one of them for hours. This works great for me as a newbie who don't aspire to be an expert but just want to capture segments of videos....

    Incorrect.

    MMC 8.1 captures audio as LPCM (up to 48kHz/16-bit) at full 720x480 resolution and in an exportable format. I capture from DirecTV and DiSH using this format day and night.

    I've been using PowerVCR II for a little while and it works fine. The scheduler is pretty good and it works with my ATI card (assuming I fix the audio issue with the ATI drivers. )

  15. If you use a Phillips SAA713x based card, Fly2000TV is great. Get it here http://www.fly2000.ru/index_e.html.Works for any WDM driver card but it's designed with SAA713x cards in mind.
