You might get a buffer under run error. It's always best to leave your writer as master. But if you are not using it you can always try it out and see what happens.
Dark booty out. -
it says the burner has buffer-underrun protection. what are some other things the contribute to faster rippin (hdd, ram, etc.) if anyone knows. thx.

Most burners work better as the Master. From my experiences they have had to be the master or the don't even function. Windows would read the disk as an unformatted virtual drive?? Doesn't make any sense but that's what happend

Master... yeah, definitely, I'm a master.
Oh, wait... that wasn't the question?ICBM target coordinates:

It's not a burner he's having problems with folks. I have a 166 set to cable select (like everything else in my computer) and I'm pretty sure it's on a slave channel (on my RAID card no less). I get 8-10x rips with it regulary, though some discs are stubborn and rip at 4x or so.
What app are you using to rip and what ASPI layer are you running? -
I think it's your ripping program and APSI layer. If you're using windows2000, then I would suggest using ForceASPI.
Personally, I use smartripper and ForceASPI. My rips start at about 4X and speed up to 10-12X, with an older Toshiba DVD drive.
My DVD drive is set as a slave. It's the Plextor's bitch. -
master and slave make NO difference. It is just two seperate postions on the cable, may as well call them 0 and 1. Your problem may be that some that you do not have DMA set on your drives. Windows seems to set this off for some reason.
No Mfr states that their product has to be set as master/slave, just that it needs the correct connection ata100,ata133,sata 150, scsi. The master slave is simply verbal shorthand and in no way means an unequal sharing of computer resources, eg data bandwidth, which on even the fastest burners is easily catered for by udma.Corned beef is now made to a higher standard than at any time in history.
The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons. -
Speaking of this, did you guys read the story about the woman who filed a lawsuit becaause she was offended by these terms? No kidding....

Kenshin, must agree with rallynavvie and RabidDog. Both my DVD drives are on slot 1, both set to Cable Select. No problems. Speed tests with DVDinfopro indicate a top reading speed for the writer as 4x, the DVD-ROM gets up past 9x for a video. BTW, I have the same writer as you, make sure you get the latest firmware from Optorite, as I/O Magic support is slow with updates.
It sounds like you should check if Ultra DMA is enabled, as a first step. Good luck.Pull! Bang! Darn!
