  1. I'll be putting together a computer together for a relative. Can someone point me to a list of what I need to make a computer (IE videocard, CPU fan). Just don't want to forget anything. Thanks

  3. Everything redwudz listed is correct but I just wanted to add that some motherboards also have Video, audio and LAN (ethernet) cards built in. So if your not looking for High performance in those areas the onboard devices will work just fine. Such as Video editing, gaming and what not. You can save a little $$$ without those items. I would also recommend buying through the internet, you can save quite a bit vs. going to the retail store. Most sites also ofer free shipping.

I'll go you one step further.
A couple weeks ago at the show, I saw a board complete with 2000XP CPU and fan for 60 bucks.

Couldn't pass it up. Finally looked at it the other day, thought I might pull the CPU, plug it into one of the other machines.

Imagine my surprise when I found it soldered to the board, socketless.

It is a PC Chips all in one board, Audio, Video, LAN, Modem Riser. Everything..

Got screwed at that point, but think I may have got screwed a little more. When I unscrewed the cooler, the die is etched with a number that includes 1300, which may be the actual speed rating..

Ah, well. Have to call them, raise some hell. Might plug it in first, see if it would make a decent starter for the 8 year old grandson. Cheap enough if it works.

    Cheers,

    George

  5. Good help guys. They have pretty much covered the most of it. Just a suggestion.......if price is an issue, AMD is a better bang for the buck then Intel.

A good board to use with AMD is the Nforce 2 board. I have the Nforce 1 board and it came with integrated video and audio.......even though i replaced both :P :P

But the audio was a true 6.1 surrond. Something that my Audigy isn't.

Also the only computer place I will buy from online is Newegg.com

Cheap prices and great shipping. I have never had a problem with any of their services. Shipping gets to me in usually 2 days. They are one of the cheapest sites around and the most reliable.

A screwdriver might come in handy me thinks + anistatic strap for the paranoid

    @gmatov
Seen those MB here in the uk (local pc shop sell complete sys -monitor for £199) on bootup BIOS screen says 2000+
but in windows properties its reported as 1.3 DURON (mobile I think)
Still for the cash not bad for a starter system.

  13. Here is the system I think I'm going to buy this week. I am an amateur video editor who is now limited by a 20GB raided data drive and slowed down by a P2 233.

1/ Please let me know if I've made a *horrible mistake* with any of these parts.
2/ My knowledge of video cards in weak as I'm *not* a major gamer. Is there any reason to get a more expensive video card that the ATI Raedon 9200?

    Thanks!

Thumper Strauss: Sounds good to me. I use a 2500 Barton with the factory heatsink and it works great. Not sure about the ATI card, I use a Nvidia card to kind of keep all the chips in the same family. Spending all that money, you might consider a ADVC-100 to make things easy.
