I am interested in purchasing a Digital Camera that also has a movie mode. I am considering a Fuji 602S, as it has the highest resoltuion for that type of camera.
I like to make slide shows of my digital stills with Premier, adding comments, music, sound effects, etc. I like to intermix some video, and have a decent Sony TRV 530.
But, for the casual quick short shots, I was thinking about a digital camera as mentioned earlier. So, just to test, I downloaded a sample avi file from a Fuji, and a Canon, that I thought I'd load into Premier, and export to MPEG, and see if it is at all reasonable to look at after burned to a DVD. But when I try to load it into Premier, I get an error message that it is an unsupported compression format.
Any thoughts on this? CAn I do it? I realize the resolution probably won't be that great, but thought I'd look to see if it's livable. But, maybe I cannot do it at all.
Thanks for your thoughts.
Roger

Well, I have figured out one answer. Let's see if anyone has anyting to add.
I found a post where someone had the error about Unsupported Compression. The response was to run it through Virtual Dub. set AUDIO settings to : compression-> none, convert to 44.1.
I did this, and could then edit it in Premier. (I haven't burned it yet to DVD to see what it looks like).
So, looks like it's possible, but it is yet more work to get to the end result: first convert all AVIs from the Digital Camera through VDUB; then edit in Premier with whatever else I want to make my movie; Then I convert that to MPEG for use as DVD.
Sure would like to not have to do that VDUB thing.
BAsed on this info...any other ideas? Thanks

I also use adobe prem.6.5. I have made dvd before, but not in along time
I will try to remember how I did it. -
I made a movie with my Canon S45 (AVI) and was able to import into Premier with Pinacle DV500 installed over it on a Micron Laptop. I switched computers to a more modern DELL and intalled the Premier by itself first and got the error message you mentioned when trying to import AVI for the canon. I installed the Pinacle Product which augments the Premier, and was then able to import the AVI but it put them in as sound files instead of video. There must be some kind of patch or add in to Premier that will allow the import of these Digital Still Camera AVI files. I will try the Virtual Dub but I know what you are saying; the more complicated it becomes, the less you make movies. The movie I did make on my Micron was great for TV viewing (considering that it was from a Digital Still Camera - movie mode). I have a 512M card and can shoot quite a bit of video on one card.

I am getting this error
File uses an unsupported compression format
do i have to pass it through Vdub as it says above or is there some plugin for premiere that i can get so it will recognise these AVI's from my digital camera (Canon A70)
