I`m having trouble backing up my dvds w/o making a bunch of coasters.I`m running with a 2.6 Pentium 4 with 512MB memory.I have a 120gig hard drive and my burner is an HP DVD Writer 300n.The program that I`m using is Dvd xCopy xPress.
About half the dvds I burn end up being trashed. These ones will play most of the movie just fine but it freezes at certain points. My dvd player will hesitate and then eventually skip ahead about 30 seconds later in the movie and resume playing.I`ve looked at the bottom of these discs.I can actually see a line where, presumably, the burning process failed for a moment.I usually can see about 2-3 of these lines on the bad discs. As previously stated, about half of them end up like this. The others have no problems at all.
Initially I thought it was the media.I was using Sony then switched to Verbatim and now I`m trying Philips.I`ve had no success with any of these so I`m ruling out media for the time being.I`m not sure if the program is causing it or the burner itself.
Dvd xCopy xPress uses a very simple interface and that`s what i like about it.Unfortunately,I can`t find any real way of customizing anything on this program.I was going to try to set the write speed as low as possible but it appears that you can`t really do anything other than just hit start.I started off using Dvd xCopy but was unable to fit certain movies onto a disc even when I cut out everything but the movie.
Any ideas as to why this is happening to me?Should I try a different program? If so,then i would still like to be able to fit just the movie on one disc.I`m not concerned with the extra content. If I want to see that I can always bust out my original copy.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks alot.I like the variety of options on dvd shrink. It`s not too basic(like dvdx copy xpress) and it`s not too complicated either.
I`m having a small problem with one dvd in particular though. The dvd in question is Fast and the Furious. When I open the disc with dvd shrink it automatically analyzes the disc.It gets about 70% through it then just stops. The error I get reads:
Failed to read from file
Data Error(cyclic redundancy check)
I`ve tried to look in the help menu of shrink but I get an error there too.It says that help has failed to launch.
Other than that it`s working really good so far. Thanks for the help. 8) -
Wicked-n-Twisted, the "Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)"ususally happens when the disc you're trying to backup is either damaged (scratched) or dirty.
Ater having given it a thorough cleaning, try ripping it with dvd decrypter, following this guide:http://www.dvdshrink.info/dvd-decrypter.php
Then simply use DVD Shrink "Open Files" and select the "VIDEO_TS.IFO" one.
If you still encounter an error, you might have to use a "DVD repair" kit of some sort.
P.S: cleaning the lense of your DVD-ripper might also help. -
The discs that skip in the dvd player will probably have errors on them.
To check this try ripping them with dvd shrink.
I had this prob but now only burn at 2.4 + bought new dvd player Akura 142s. £37.49 UK. plays vcd svcd mp3 dvd+r dvd-r cd+g.
Plays all discs that skipped in old player perfectly.
