  1. I currently have four devices connected to my PC:

    IDE0:
Hard Drive C (30 gigs - system and apps) - Master
    2.4x DVD burner - Slave

    IDE1:
Hard Drive E (120 gigs - files, including rips, etc.) - Master
    CD/DVD reader - Slave

I set it up this way because I thought that I would get better speed by having my rip files on a different chain from my burner, but I don't think it's working well after all. My burns are taking 40 minutes or so, which is about twice as long as I expect them to take with this burner. Would I get better speed by having the two hard drives on the same chain and the two DVD drives on the other?

  2. A 2.4x DVD+R burner should be able to burn a full 4.3/3.7GB disc in 25min. So you're burning slower than expected but no one can really saw why yet:

    1) What media are you using (is it rated to burn at 2.4x speed)
    2) What software are you using to burn, what speed does it report while burning
    3) How are you processing your files prior to burning
    4) Do you have a valid ASPI layer installed and DMA enabled

  3. I seem to have fixed my speed problem, and it had nothing to do with the IDE setup. I checked Device Manager and found that some devices were set to PIO instead of DMA mode. Plus I clicked Test All Drives in Nero (which may or may not have helped, but I guess it didn't hurt).

Now I can burn full DVDs in under 25 minutes, so that's the important thing. Plus before I was unable to do anything else while it burned a DVD, and now it just runs happily in the background while I type this message. DMA makes all the difference.

Just because I'm the curious type, however, I'd still like to know what people think about my IDE chain setup...
