Slow DVD ripping

I've just re-installed XP pro on my system and ever since, my DVD ripping speeds have dropped to between 2.7x and 4.9x using DVD Decrypter and Smartripper.

I've read the threads on slow rip speeds and enabled DMA on all channels and installed the lates ASPI drivers to no avail.

My hardware configuration has not changed at all and the DVD-ROM (Samsung DVD ROM SD616Q) still works.

What do I need to do to get back to the glory days of 9-13x?

If it was faster before, then it's your ASPI layer. DVDDecrypter will use 4 difffernt layers in XP, try changing a setting and see if it rips faster.

if you installed the latest ASPI from Adaptec that may be your problem. download Force ASPI instead. its the Adaptec 4.6 drivers. the newest ones are too buggy.

ASPI - WNASPI32.DLL
SPTI - NT/2000/XP.NET

no change.

okay lets try this. in the files for ForceASPI, run dumpASPI, then run killASPI. Then Run instASPI and reboot. the first backs up the ASPI layer, the second completely deletes the current layer. the third will install it again. If you've already tried that no need to do it again. Open the Index Webpage included with ForceASPI. there is a link to download the Adaptec ASPI checker. download that and run it to make sure its all installed correctly. If it still doesn't wok you could try installing NERO's ASPI layer. Some people have trouble with Adaptec and find NERO's works better.

A google search for nero aspi found a file called wnaspi32.dll. Is this it and how do I use it?

click the Tools link on the left and type ASPI in the search box and it'll bring up a link to it, or get them from Nero.com. they are free to use.

Delete your ide controller from device manager, reboot and let windows find it again. Thats a simple fix for WinXp -> slow ripping speed problem

from that screenshot I'd say you still have adaptecs new ASPI installed, the buggy one. Force ASPI should list it all as 4.6. but it's really looking like the ASPI isn't the problem here.

Did you try that "delete your IDE controller and reboot"-method?

Yep did all that, plus another re-format and fresh install of XP, re-set the IDE controllers to DMA etc. Just don't know what to do next - starts at x2.7 and just creeps over x5. I can't even hear the drive ripping - before it was like a jet taking off!

Just wiped the aspi layer and put in 4.6 - no change!

Have you try to rip with other DVD-ROM drive? Maybe that Samsung is the problem?

My DRU is pegged to x2

I don't want to buy a new ripper because I can't see how a fresh install would cause it to fail.

It still sounds great when copying from CD to HD so I assume it is spinning OK - it's just DVD ripping that causes problems.

Well the WinXP can cause lots of problems that cant be understanded...

Hmmm... have you install your mainboards IDE drivers?

download the DSS utility to allow your Sony to rip at up to 12x I think

I've got almost the same problem...only my problem is that I installed a new DVD Burner....NOW both are ripping VERY slow. MUch slower than before the BUrner....also with XP Pro.
Still haven't figured my computer out yet..
