Region specific blank DVDs do not exist. A Blank DVD is just that "BLANK". YOU have to tell it in your authorizing programs what region/ regions the data is restricted to.

  3. Thanks Dennis !!

So in the process of recording to the DVD I can program it to a certian region?
If I program it to the USA region will it play on ANY DVD player here in the USA?

Not really, Consumer level Authorizing programs usually do not allow user intervention region coding. They usually hardcode Region 0 or All Region into VIDEO_TS.IFO. after that the only limitation is NTSC and PAL playback. Most USA DVD player are restricteed to Region 1 NTSC, but many can still play Region 0 NTSC and All Region NTSC, BUT some can not. I do not technically know the difference between Region 0 and All Region.

IfoEdit allows you to change the Region codes to other than Region 1 (254).

  5. And one other thing...

...I understand that some movies (already on a DVD) might be to large to copy to a blank DVD. There a 4.7 limit...correct me if I'm wrong.
But how did the studio get the movie on on the original DVD? Do they hold more/ or are larger than the the DVDs we can buy?

As of this date, recordable DVD are limited to (DVD-5) single side layer 4.37 GB and DVD-10. Studio DVD can be issued on a DVD-5 or a DVD-9 (single side dual layer 9 GB) or a DVD-10 (dual side single layer 4.37 GB per side) or even a DVD-18 (dual side dual layer 9 GB per side). Studio DVD are not recorded/ Burned as consumer DVDs are there are pressed like a silver CD.

Currently recordable DVD-10 are only available in DVD-R no DVD+R.

There are many programs avaiable to "shrink" or "split" a DVD-9 onto a DVD-5.

  8. I read where the movie can be compressed to fit the DVD but it will affect the quality of the picture.

sounds like someone need to come up with a consumer version of the "press" !!
