  1. When I use VirtualDub to split an AVI file in two (2 x 350 MB), each of the halves ends up taking over 17 GB of memory in my hard drive, why is this?

because you are not selecting "Direct Stream Copy" under Video, and you are saving uncompressed files.

    most likely.

  3. I deleted the files from my computer but my hard drive is still low on space, as if they were still there, do you know how to solve this problem?

Check in your recycle bin. Most times when you 'delete' files they are really just moved to the Recycle Bin and so are still on your harddrive taking up space. You have to empty the Recycle Bin to actually remove them and free up the space.

When you delete a file, if you hold down the Shift key then hit delete it should bypass the recycle bin and just remove the file.

also make sure that you don't have some sort of "system restore" function active on your machine, it will take those files and stick a backup copy of them in a restore directory.

I had that turned on somehow one night, kept deleting files and my hard drive kept filling up.... I was down to 68K of free space on a 40Gb drive before I found the problem....
