Choose a codec (XviD or DivX, most likely) and a bitrate, among other things. You're just making an uncompressed (or lossless) AVI file.

700kb? Are you sure about that?

Set the video bitrate to same as the source bitrate. Get the source bitrate from video->information in virtualdub.

Rogert, what kind of AVI do you have? AVI is just a container for a wide variety of video codecs. If you want to maintain the same file size, figure out what kind of .avi you have (i.e. - DV, Divx, Xvid, Uncompressed, etc.) VirtualDub defaults to an uncompressed AVI, which makes a humongous file. Go under Video > Compression in VirtualDub to see the list of AVI choices, and select the one that best suits your needs.

To learn which AVI codec your source file is, download the free program GSpot from the Tools section of this site, and open your AVI in it. GSpot will tell you what codec, bitrate, frame rate, etc. your source file is.

Just a word of warning. If your source is Divx or Xvid and you want to encode back to that format, you will degrade the image quality to some extent, depending on the bitrate you select.

No. You are changing the video by adding an overlay. You need to re-encode the video.
The second you add a filter to that video all hopes of "direct stream copy" are gone.

That doesn't mean you can't have the same file size.
As Baldrick said, just use the same bitrate as the original.
