Not getting anywhere with this so here goes. Not sure the exact terminology for this either. If I have an mpg1 existing as a widescreen (16:9) and I want to remove the black areas above and below the actual video (remove letterboxing???) how do I go about doing that??? Can someone give me a simple procedure to remove the black stuff above and below and resize the actual video to be full-screen? I think this can be done with a combination of VirtuaDub and TEMPGEnc but I can't figure out the exact procedure. Is it safe to assume that I am not talking about cropping here...but resizing...or not??? Need some expert advice...
Thanks
Dan

so for some reason you want to distort a widescreen picture and play it back full screen?

No such thing as a 16:9 MPEG1, only 4:3 is supported.
You can crop off the black, then resize it back to the original resolution. Now it will be "16:9" and look terrible both on your computer and TV.
Now drop the resized video into TMPGEnc (frameserve it) and set source as 16:9 then encode away.To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan
