  1. Converted The Patriot using Sefy's guide, never had any problems before until now that is. Although The Patriot converted properly with excellent quality, I'm a little concerned about the time it took for Tmpgenc to encode almost 18 hours. It has never taken this lenght of time with similiar movies of approx the same time span. My machine is a Pentium 3, 500 mgz, 374 ram. I follow Sefy's guide to the letter which is very easy to understand. So maybe someone can explain why other movies of the same lenght take only 8 to 9 hours to encode. I use the Pal template that comes with Tmpengc.

When I convert a 480x480 NTSC Film 0:45:40 (h:mms) video to MPEG2 CBR 2100kbps (frame serving from Vdub) on a 1.2GHz Athlon w/ 256MB DDR Ram, it takes about 2:45:00. This is High quality (not highest quality). If I do 2 pass VBR then it takes about twice the time.

    patysym1,
It could have been a few reasons why it took so long. Did you use 2-Pass VBR instead of CBR? Also from what I know, The Partiot is a long movie (probably 2 or more hours), which results in more frames/time to encode than most average movies of 90-100min. Did you you use 'High Quality' and not 'Highest Quality' under Motion Precision Search? All of these can relate to your extensive encode time.

    IS NORMAL

I've got an Athlon 1.2Gz and 256Mb Ram. Even with this config, 25minutes of video takes about 3h30 using SeVCD as template. This is due the VBR that's used for encoding.
You best start your encoding when you're going to bed or to work..

  6. I've have an Athlon T Bird 1.7Gz and 768Mb Ram.
When I convert a 480x480 NTSC movie 1:37:40 (h:mms) video to MPEG2 CBR 4200kbps it takes about 2:10. This is ferfect quality .

  7. patsym1, i'm presuming even though some movies are the same length, they are either encoded diffrently or have some diffrent features or motion, and each movies encode diffrently.
the motion in the movie I believe is a big factor as to how fast it would be encoded, since the more motion, the more bitrate is required for high quality, but i'm only guessing.
