I was looking at the DAC-100 DV Converter and it looks good, but I was curious about something. If I have a Mini-DV Camcorder (which I do) with analog passthrough capability, isn't that the same thing or am I missing something?
I know this is a stupid question and I apologize. I just want to be crystal clear on this before I make any hasty decisions.
Thanks in advance!

Yes, pass through also does the same thing. There is an article on this site as well.

I use a Canon ZR40 for that exact purpose when i need A/D conversions.
NEVER had an issue, although some will say it "damages the camera". Total BS in my opinion since it is just using the electronic A/D circuits as designed. No head wear. ?! Where can the 'wear/damage' occur?
Grab a firewire card and A/D away.

I agree. The advantage of using DAC-100 may be that it allows you to go multisystem (like PAL) plus more input-output options (not always).
Other then that camcorder A/D circuit has the same function and was implemented for you to use it!!! -
