I wanted to know why when ripping a movie my read rate is at 5+ times until a certain file comes along and the read rate goes to 0.2-1.0 times. Why does this happen and is there a way for me to keep my read rate consistent???
Thanks

Scratches or smudges can cause a DVD-ROM drive to have to slow down to extract the data from the disk. Many DVD's have some sort of scratching...and your ROM will slow down when it gets to those points..so that it can rip the data correctly. Often times I have disks without scratching..and the disk will rip progressively faster and faster. I usually get over 15x for single layer DVD's.
I have ripped a disk in about 3 minutes...and it's almost always between 4-5. Dual Layer disks I can get a little more then 10x on....as can I with DVDR's. I definitely can NOT complain about rip speeds. But occasionally the drive will go from..say....12.4x down to 1 or 2x....when it gets passed those bad areas...the speeds will progressively increase again.
It's nothing you can control..I usually put scratch cleanser on any disk i'm getting ready to backup if there are noticeable scratches. -
Is there any really good dvd scratch cleaner brand name or are they all going to do the same job?? I know we sell CD scratch cleaner at Radioshack but that is different than DVD scratch cleaner isn't it?
