I live in UK but am visiting US soon. The DVD+-RW drives in US are much cheaper compared to UK.
My question is that can I play the DVDs I burn with the drive bought in US in my standalone DVD players in UK?
Anyone has experience in this matter please help....

Yes. After copying a DVD to hard disk then burn onto DVD disc, the region protect is gone, means it can be played on any DVD region.

To be a little more specific with regards to the original question, MEDIA does not have a region code on it - if you wanted to author discs with a specific code on it, that's a different matter, but you can buy your media anywhere. Hardware does not have a region set out of the box because the manufacturer does not know where in the world any particular drive will end up.

Most DVD drives will play any region for the 1st 5 play backs and usually the 5th will set it PERMANENT! If you play region 2 movies at the 5th, it will be region 2 forever!

From the earlier responses, can I conclude that there wouldn't be any problem of buying a DVD+-RW drive from US to be used in UK. I plan to use the drive for 2 main purposes:
1) to create DVDs from clips compiled from my camcorder
2) to watch DVD movies (mostly region 2 DVDs) on my PC
I am planning to buy the budget priced NEC 1300A, any comments on this product?
Also, does that DVDs created by myself have any region code on it? I hope to be able to send my son's DVD footage to my families (in US and Asia Pacific) -
It will work wkt20
I live in the Uk & i bought my Pioneer 105 from the usa (like you say much cheaper out there) & i have had no trouble with it at all -
I am not an import/export lawyer, nor do I play one on TV. But, theoretically, wouldn't you have to sneak your DVD drive into the UK without declaring it? Otherwise, wouldn't you have to pay customs on it, thereby eliminating at least some of your savings?

ebenton,
I don't think customs are too worried about what you bring back, so long as it's not in the more exotic range of "pharmaceuticals", and besides you are allowed to bring in a certain amount.

The only theing to be concerned of here is the reigion setting of the DVD-R drive, but then if it's installed in the UK, then you'll be fine anyway. You can of course always reflash certain DVD-R drives with reigion free firmware as well
Enjoy your trip to the USA

What sort of prices are you talking about for drives?? I dont think the difference is that big. I have just got an email offering a brand new writer for £46...yes £46... about $65.. is it worth the hassle of buying in USA when you can get these sort of deals?
