I am currently using Nero 5.5. I heard that Nero 6 now supports MPEG-4 formats (avi, divx). Does this mean I no longer need to use TMPGEnc to convert movies to .mpg before using Nero? So I can simply burn from .avi straight to SVCD?

  2. your version supports it too. you'll still have to go through the whole encoding process with both versions. The other problem is that I dont think there is a way to vary the source length or video bitrate. So, the movie would have to be split already.

Even if Nero can do AVI to (S)VCD all by itself, it's not the best way, to put it mildly. Even if we put bad quality and no means to tweak any settings to the side, you will have no idea of the integrity of the final (S)VCD until you put the CD in the player.
If you however do the conversion in several steps (encode, author, burn) you can check the outcome of one stage before embarking on the next.
