  1. I recently purchased the HP DVD200i. I created and burned a DVD +RW using the supplied HP +RW disk. This disk plays fine on the computer, but I cannot get it to play in a Sony DVP-S530 player even though the HP compatibility list indicates there should be no problem. I am wondering if there is an issue with ability of the standalone players to read different brand of DVD +RW disks as there is with different brands of CD RW and CDR disks. If so, I would love to hear people's experiences and any recommendations, especially as it related to Sony players. The information I found here for CD disks and the Sony CD RW and CDR disks was very helpful. Finally, I would like to hear other's experience with HP Support. I have basically received three sessions of stalling with no real help. If this is the case with others, I would love to know because I am considering pulling the HP DVD200i and returning it for the new Pioneer A04.

    Hi oldman,

I don't have HP, but I have Philips DVD+RW 208. Every DVD video disk that I make on DVD+RW media plays perfectly on my Sony DVP-S560D.
Post more details what DVD authoring and burning programs you use.
Also visit this site http://www.dvdplusrw.org. You might find help there.

    Regards.

    lol!

Agreed. HP shot themselves in the foot (and screwed their customers in the process) with the DVD100i/DVD200i "upgrade" scheme. I'm surprised the +RW Alliance hasn't stepped in at all, as it is reflecting upon them as well...

DVD-R media prices and compatibility can't be beat right now. DVD-R is also emerging as the accepted, and only standard, in the pro-video recording/distribution world (ie. try to find any high-end online pro video vendors who carry DVD+R/W drives - try none. And online stores such as guygraphics, videoguys, etc. have no plans to carry DVD+R/W drives at this time). Also, right now DVD+R media compatibility in DVD-ROMs is uncertain - as pointed out in the new cdrinfo review of the new Ricoh DVD+R/W drive. And, DVD+R media is (right now) not compatible with some AOpen DVD drives, some Pioneer DVD-ROMs, and the first DVD/CD-R/W combo drive from Plextor.

Of course, the final decision is up to you...

I did one with Pinnacle Studio DV and Pinnacle Express. I did the other one with the MyDVD and ArchSoft that came with the HP DVD200i. Neither one will play in my Sony DVP-S530D. By the way, what brand of DVD +RW disks are you using?

I used one Philips that came with my drive, and a bunch of Verbatim, HP, and Memorex. All disks play great in my Sony player. It may be something wrong with your burning programs. Go to that site that I mentioned in my first post, and post your question there. A lot of guys already have HP 200i and may be some have Pinnacle products, and they might be able to help you. Also try to compile your project to the hard drive first, and then burn your DVD video disk as data DVD, just burn your AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders to DVD.

Are you sure it's the DVD+RW or is it your burning (software or settings)? Have you tried DVD+R? They are much more compatible than DVD+RW. If that works, then you know it's not your software or software settings.

Or if you're sure DVD-RW works, then you can just take the 200i back and get a Pioneer A04.

  9. The latest development is that I did burn a DVD +R, and it played fine in the Sony DVP-S530D. This leads me to assume that the problem is that the Sony cannot read the DVD +RWs (or at least HP's DVD +RW). This is probably due to the different methodof writing the DVD +RW (I believe dye based changes) versus the DVD +R (actually "burning" the DVD).

This leads me back to one of my previous questions. Does anyone have any experience with different brands of DVD +RW. I know that certain brands of CD-RWs work better in the Sony DVP-S530D. Paradoxically, I believe that, in general, CD-RWs worked better for the Sony that the CD-Rs.

    Any info would be appreciated.[/i]

  10. i had the sony dru110a/c for 2 days made a rip using the Sony dvd+rw and it worked fine in my sony nc600 dvd changer and my panasonic rv-31

i took it back because i wanted the capability to burn +r's and +rw's so i got the hp dvd200i and it seems to work great as well, using memorax +rw's , what i have been reading is maybe the verbatim's +r's and +rw's maybe better for video as they are trying to mirror that of commercial manufactured DVD's so i am going to be picking some of those branded disc up soon, so far sony +rw's work great, and Memorax +rw's work great havnt broke the seal on the 2 HP disc that came with the drive yet
    hope this helps

  11. I bought some different brands of DVD +RW and DVD +R disks. I burned a Verbatim DVD +RW. I had the same result as with the HP DVD +RW. It played fine in the computer. It will not play in the Sony DVD-S530D.

I believe the problem is that the DVD player compatibility list is inaccurate. This list of compatible DVD players can be found at http://www.hp.com/cposupport/information_storage/support_doc/lpg41401.html#P12_1134. This page's own language states, "For DVD players, compatible means DVD+RW discs are recognized by the player and successfully played back."

However, this is not the case with the Sony DVP-S530D (clearly included on the list along with a long list of other Sony players). It makes you wonder how many others listed here are incorrect, doesn't it? Of course, if you look at the bottom of this page, you will see this language, "This information is subject to change without notice and is provided "as is" with no warranty. Hewlett-Packard shall not be liable for any direct,
indirect, special, incidental or consequential damages in connection with the use of this material."

I have one question about this. If they do not want anybody to rely on the information provided on this page when making a decision on purchasing their DVD burner, then why do they provide it? I think everyone knows the answer. Also, I must say that I have been less than satisfied in my attempts to get help from HP support. It has been basically worthless in my opinion.

This has been very frustrating because I tried to do research and obtain as much information as possible about specifications, capabilities, and compatibilities. Then, when you find an apparent error, no one really wants to do anything. They just stonewall you hoping you will go away.

  12. Just wondering if you give the +RW disks a chance. Sometimes my Toshiba player won't initialize them on the first (or second, third) try but eventually work. I know that's not acceptable but was wondering if anyone else experienced this.

  13. Just wanted to add that I don't think the -RW or -RW compatibility debate is worth the space on this forum. Neither of these are compatible enough with all players to be viable. And also, why would anyone want to distribute on a rewritable media?? Don't know about -R/-RW but the +R discs are currently half the cost of +RW.

I happen to have a HP100i (soon to be 200i). I use the +RW media to test my creations (my set-top player plays +RW and there's nothing like seeing it on a TV for debugging purposes) and will burn final version on +R. JMHO.
