In todays add, Best Buy has TDK DVD+R disks on sale....spindle of 25 for $25 both in the store and online with free shipping. If these are the RICOH disks, this is a pretty good deal. Has anyoneone bought a spindle of these from Best Buy? I think in a previous thread it was decided that it wasn't possible to tell if the disks were RICOH or CMC by the color of the base. Is this correct? I have also heard people say that they have been having OK results recently with the CMC disks. I am going to try my luck and pick up a spindle...

I have used the TDK ricoh +Rs on my optorite 0201 and they work perfect. I have had no problems with burning or playback. I just hope that these are the ricoh discs.

  14. Mine were black spindle. I bought 4 x25 packs, all black. On the website they have grey spindles. Doesnt seem to be any pattern to spndle color to media type. I'm just going to return the 3 other packs of discs. Not going to risk opening them and not being able to return them

Most stores will let you return them if there's a problem. You might have the good TDK's. I suggest testing them before you return. It's to bad that it's imposable to tell the media type with TDK. I just read in another forum about this deal and a lot of guys there are going nuts because their beloved TDK's are on sale. I didn't have the heart to tell them that there's a good chance they're CMC. (they wouldn't have understand what the hell I was talking about anyway)

  17. I bought a 25-pk from BestBuy in the SFO Bay area yesterday. It is CMC and I plan to return it. Yes, I am getting coasters with (Memorex) CMC and Plextor 708A. Right now, I don't know whether it is the media, the drive or both.

I can only surmise that Memorex and TDK are switching to CMC, probably to a lower cost supplier thus more profitable to them. In so doing, they seem to overlook quality which might counter-act on their intent in a longer run.

If you aren't having a problem with the CMC, then I would use them. Have you tried burning DVD movies on them? If you plan to, you may want to check playback near the end of the movie to make sure you don't get any skipping or anyhting. As long as the disks are working well for you, I would use them.

  21. I got really lucky with OfficeMax. I got a 25 disk spindle of Imation +R's for $15 after rebates. They turned out to be Ricoh's and burn at 4X. I'm afraid I've had bad luck with any of the Best Buys I've been to, however. While I'm sure not all of them are problematic, you may want to check out BestBuySux.org.

Take a look at the customer submissions section. But if the one you shop at hasn't given you any problems, then there's nothing to worry about....

  22. Just FYI. The 10pack TDK DVDR+ is CMC MAG F01, but i burned movies on them with my LiteON 411S at 4X and the playback is perfect even at the very end of the movie (outer rims). Couldn't be happier.

Will probably go out and get some of those (ricohjpn is fine too.)

    Hope this helps.

bought a 25 pack of tdk 4x for $25 at best buy. came home 10 minutes later and discovered that they were cmc mag f01. the media speed code on these is 2.4x? wtf? i know they'll still burn at 4x though. anyhow i went back to best buy to try another pack that looked different from the first pack so i chose a case with a translucent cover as opposed to the transparent cover of the the first pack. came home and they were cmc's also. i decided to keep em and have made 5 successful copies of video dvd's with my lite-on 411s w/ FW FSOH using dvd shrink 3.1.4 and dvd decrypter 3.1.9.0.

im still trying to find noticable differences between the ricohs and cmcs. i noticed that the ricohs have a string of type in the inner plastic of the disc where as the cmcs do not. this type can only be seen when the disc is out of the case since they have those rings covering them when they are in the package. next thing i noticed was near the plastic (again) there are two rings one metalic next to the plastic and one slightly off color of the dvd face. the off color ring on the ricoh is thinner than the cmc's. hope its obvious in the attached picture.

the top are ricoh and the bottom are cmc. its possible to see these rings when the discs are in the package as long as the cover is transparent. i hope some one can verify these theoretical descriptors.

if any of you are wondering, i bought the ricoh tdk's at target when they were on sale, 20 pack for $25. also, both the ricoh and cmc packs had the black base.

on another note, have any of you all read the inside of the tdk paper label? i thought it was odd that under the one year limited waranty it states, "This Limited Warranty does not apply to defects resulting from acts of God..." how on earth do they know if something know is an act of God? anyhoo, i hope this post helps out some, if any.

  25. finally had a chance go through the CMC discs and had no problems toward the end of the movies. so far, ive burned 6 discs all without problems... sign... i just hate the fact that i have to check every disc (CMC batch)...

I also notice the same physical differences as you described between RICOH and CMC discs.

With Plextor 708A and Nero 6, CMC discs will burn only at 4x and up to around 3GB only; when length is around 4GB, I get coasters (anyone knows why?). On the other hand, RICOH discs will burn at 8x and up to 4.4GB with no problem. This is why I prefer RICOH discs.

I can verify that the ricohs I have show the characteristics that you mentioned the ricohs have, but I don't have any of the CMCs....from what I've read in this thread, the size of the discolored ring and the printing in the center seems to be a good way to tell the difference. Thanks mro

The Ricoh packs I got from CompUSA (PM'ed them to Best Buy) had no string of type as you describe, But the ones I got from Staples the week before did.

aahh...best buy, circuit city, compusa, and target might have my picture up on their walls for examining all thier tdk dvd+r media...if i had the money i would have bought a pack from compusa which had the identifiers mentioned.

hey, soundforbjt on the pack you got did they have two plastic rings on the spindle or two foam rings? the ricoh pack i had had plastic rings and the cmc's were foam. i was just thinkin this might help narrow down the search also.

anyway i hope someone can recommend another brand of dvd+r's that are sure to be ricoh. does sony sell spindles of their dvd+rs? the sony's i have are ricoh and are very good. in dvd decrypter i reached something like 4.5x for the last 3 minutes of burn time. is this odd? cmc's so far "seem" to be burning fine at 4x and up to 4474mb.

thanks to all those contributing to this post.
