Easiest way to convert DVD VOB to uncompressed AVI?

The title pretty much says it all. I need to convert my DVD VOB files over to uncompressed AVI with audio and I was looking for the best solution.

I ended up using DVDShrink so I could edit down small chunks I want to pull off at a time, and then VirtualDub to make it a AVI.

It "has" to be uncompressed because I want the highest quality as possible, I want "no" quality loss. I've got a 20GB HDD partition set aside for this and it's plenty of room. In the future I plan to replace it with a completely seperate 80GB drive just for doing this.

I'm pulling data off of DVD's I've created using our home Panasonic DVD recorder.

When I need to do just that, I use SmartRipper to rip the video and audio out of the VOBs into a single large (5-6Gb) VOB file and then VirtualDUB to convert it to AVI and WAV.

I convert the audio to uncompressed WAV and for video I use HufYUV at it's best setting. This video codec is lossless at the medium settings and only slightly lossy (theoretically) at it's best settings. It compresses moderatelly, i.e. a 2 hour video goes down from 200Gb to just 40Gb, which is manageable.

I don't know what type of video and what length you work with, but with "only" 80Gb you can't store enough uncompressed data.

I'm only dealing with 30 to 60 second length sections and maybe about 10 of them. I use these sections to form them together in Ulead Mediastudio to create 3min length music videos of DVD qulity, so I want them with "no" compression. Usually I'm dealling with about 12 to 15GB of data to make the final AVI video, then I send it through TMPG to create the MPEG2 video that get's burned to a DVD using MovieFactory2.

and save a chunk of room ...

Someone seems to have missed compression 101.

You are "ripping" VOB's (or portions there of) for music videos - correct ?

Why the extra effort? Converting from MPEG2 to "uncompressed AVI" is an excercise in futility, since you will just be re encoding back to MPEG2. (and experiencing information loss).

Why not just "strip/rip" the segments of the vob you need and merge them together with TMPGEnc tools. DeMux the audio from the video, add your audio and ReMux.

If you plan on adding transitions and effects then this is a different matter. Some loss will be encured.

Someone must have missed "Family Music Video Creation 101"... I use Ulead because of the added effects needed to keep a music video interesting and fun to watch. Thanks for the info, but you really don't understand what I'm trying to do and the whole point here was just the question on how to get it to an AVI, not going into detail of what I'm doing.
