  1. I'm trying to convert my divx and avi files to dvd-rs, but I want to keep good sound quality. I'm willing to spend the extra time to convert it to dts or 5.1 if that is possible. How can I get good sound? Is there a guide of some sort somewhere?

  2. You can't improve on the sound quality that is in your AVi's. Converting to Ac3 or DTS will not help.

What format is the sound in your avi's?

  3. In that case either convert to mp2, if your DVD player supports it (most do but some US players do not), LPCM or 2 chan Ac3. The quality will be pretty much the same as the Mp3.

  4. You could convert the mp3 to wav n then the wav to ac3 using Softencode or something like it.

You could then end up with a 'surround sound' 5.1 mix. The actual quality wont be improved but youll have a surround sound effect.

You could try opening the file in cooledit/adobe audition or soundforge, or similar audio editing program and try applying some filters to enhance the sound, but you may not get the exact results you want. If you own a audio editing program, give it a try.
