Hey all. I just got a dual format dvd burner ( optorite ) and I am having trouble getting media to work in my standalone dvd player ( samsung ).
I have tried dvd-r ( memorex and tdk ). I have used nero to burn the video_ts files once I have created them using dvd decrypter and split the movie ( dvd-9 ) with dvd fab.
The dvd-r work in my roommates stand-alone, and some of my friends, but not mine. Then today, I was copying a burned dvd-r and I used dvd decrypter to make an .iso and burned that within dvd decrypter. To my surprise that worked in my stand-alone! Is that normal, are .iso more compatible? And if so, how can I create .iso of a split dvd-9 video_ts files. TIA
Mike

Did you burn it to another DVD-R or to a DVD+R? Not all players support both/either media types.
Ejoc's CVD Page:
DVDDecrypter -> DVD2AVI -> Vobsub -> AVISynth -> TMPGEnc -> VCDEasy
DVD:
DVDShrink -> RecordNow DX
Capture:
VirualDub -> AVISynth -> QuEnc -> ffmpeggui -> TMPGEnc DVD Author -
I used the same media that wasn't working before. ( I copied from a tdk )
So another strange thing about all of this is that I do have some dvd-r media that works....it's tdk. That is why I was real surprised that it didn't work when i burned the video_ts files with nero.
I still would like to know about why the iso way worked and the video_ts didn't but I did find some info.... IMG Tool Classic I think will make an .iso of the ts files right?
Also, is the iso image that is used for dvd burning the same as a normal iso ( iso 9660 ). I notice that imgtool also seems to have mkisofs... if these iso's are indeed the same, any linux people out there know what options i would use to do it in linux?
Sorry for all the questions, I am a newbie
Thanks again.

Yes ImgTool will create an ISO.
I also have this burner. I have had experiences with this burner that are quite baffling. The burner is quite picky about media and burning software. The only thing I can suggest is once you find something that works, stick with it.
My limited experience with trying various media indicates that the drive may prefer DVD+R.
You can find recommended Nero settings here:

In ImgTool go to under 'Other Settings'
uncheck 'Enable ISO 9660' ...or if you have if unchecked already then check it. -
I haven't tried to use img tool yet....I was thinking maybe that would solve my problem. Does anyone know if burning iso tends to give better or worse results generally speaking.

I can't think of any reason why burning an iso would be inherently better. It amounts to the same thing. It just breaks up the process into two steps and takes longer. However, if you find that it's the only method that works for you then obviously it's best for your particular situation.

Yeah, I'm not sure why it makes a difference but I did use IMG Tool to create an ISO and burned another cd, again with dvd decrypter, and it worked. Maybe the ISO isn't the factor, maybe it's nero? Is that possible?

The fact that you got it to work point to the burning s/w
I got same burner, and burn with nero ok if I burn same files with TMPGEnc DVD Author my standalone dvd player cant see the disc!
BTW what version of nero r u running? versions that worked 4 me are listed below
6.0.0.0
6.0.0.15
5.5.10.42 <-- current setup -
Because Ahead seem to be going backward (with respect to productivity) as thy increase the version number !.
5.5.10.42 works fine for me.
I didn’t particularly like the new ‘fisher price’ look of version 6, and version 6.0.0.15 had overburning issues and god know what else wrong with it..
off topic:-- has anyone installed win 3.1 on modern hardware (2Ghz+ boots in seconds!

I went through a lot of issues with my Samsung HT-DM150 DVD Player, it only wanted to play a select few burnt DVDs and I couldn't find a pattern so I blamed the disc quality.
However it actually turned out to be errors in the IFO file from the rip, so now I always rip with either DVDFab or DVDDecryptor and then Create IFO's and Get VTS Sectors in ifoEdit. Once I do this I can burn with Nero or what ever I want and they always play no matter what media I use.
I've also done just Get VTS Sectors and that seems to work as well but I tend to stick with both steps becuase it hasn't failed me yet. -

Not sure why I am inconsistant results, but I guess I will try the other things mentioned in this thread, thanks for all the replys, any other suggestions are welcomed

When you say you're using TDK media, do you mean REAL TDK media, or does it just have a TDK media code ?
TDK don't make media for anyone else - unless it's got TDK printed on the top of the disc, chances are it's a Princo disc, and they have been known to be somewhat variable in quality before now. -
Well, the one I just attempted, and failed with, was a TDK. It does say TDK on the top of the disk, what do "fake" TDK look like on top?

My solution at the moment is to treat this burner as a DVD±R drive. Some people have trouble burning DVD-R and some don't. Like you I can burn DVD-R and have it work in most players. But it doesn't work in my player. And yet every report I could find of people using Ritek DVD-R in my Sony player indicated that the player works fine with this media. The only exception I've found is someone who PM'd me and has the same Optorite burner and Sony player.

UPDATE: More headaches! Still having inconsistant results... some "backups" play fine, some play crappy, some don't play at all.
I just got some new media, Ritek G04, burned a movie or two, worked perfect. Now I go to burn another after splitting the movie into 2 discs ( DVD decrypter and then DVDFAB ). The first disc plays great, second, not detected in my player. Anyone have any ideas why I am having soo much trouble. BTW all the discs I have burned work in my roomates DVD player. So it must be my DVD player, but why the inconsistancy? Thanks everyone.
