  1. I continue to adjust the setting trying to learn more about them. I decided to compare Constant Quality (CQ) with Automatic VBR (CQ_VBR). I left the settings the same with the Quality at 65, MaxBR at 2000, and MinBR at 0. I also turned the log on so I could see better exactly what was happening.

When I looked at the log summary at the end, the GOP frames were the same (46A, 54M). The VBV was also the same (80).

What did change was the AvgBR. In CQ the average was 1227. In CQ_VBR it was 1828 resulting in a larger file size. I then looked at the individual GOPs. It seems that CQ is much more responsive using a high BR when needed and a much lower one when not.

I like the program to be more adaptive to the particular scene. I find CQ to be much more efficient than CQ_VBR.

  2. I reviewed the first third of GOPs in the log file. In CQ mode with my current settings the Max BR = 2052, the Min BR = 497.

This is quite a range and means the program is very responsive to sceen changes in this mode.

I think this is important in maintaining high quality with minimum file size.

Now to see if I can get 2 pass to work.
