I am trying to find out how to convert my homemade dv camcorder movies, recorded in PAL, to NTSC, so that I may burn an NTSC dvd to send to friends back in the US. I would prefer to keep the avi file so that I may author the dvd menus myself.
I have tried videoconverter 1.0, advantage video converter, supervideoconverter,
all of them, the video looks strange, a little jerkey, not really what I had hoped for.
the guides alread on this forum are either for making vcds, svcds, or going from divx to dvd.
the one guide for transferring from pal dvd to ntsc dvd, I had good results with the video, but got no audio.
I cannot afford 500 dollars for canopus procorder or 600 for adobe aftereffect, are there any other alternatives?

What editing software do you have?
Coverting PAL to NTSC is a real nightmare. I do it with Premiere 6.5 by adjusting the number of frames (basically asking the software to increase the number of frames by a ratio of 29.96/25). I you want to stick to avi, you just need to change the number of frames per second.
Personnaly, I want to burn DVDs. I therefore compress the avi file with TMPGENc without changing the frame rate.
Quality is not as good as original but still pretty good. With this method, you do not need to change the audio since wahte the software achieved was to create the 4.96 additionnal frames per second.
Some peolple suggest slowing down the video to 23.976 and use pulldown. In this case you also need to slow down the audio. But I find that the loss in video quality is not as bad as the slow down of the audio. It is propbably a question of taste and ability of the softare to create the new frames.
Again, this is the simplest method I found to do it. I spent hours and hours trying all the other methods regularly posted on tis site and others but without out any better luck. -
Also be sure to choose PCM audio, not mp2 that can currently be used in Europe.
DVDs for U.S. must be PCM or AC3.
Try Tmpgenc. Very popular. Inexpensive. There's no place like 127.0.0.1

Ok, after reading some forums I figured out part of the problem,
the conversion routine on this website is for pal dvd to ntsc dvd, however, the video from my camcorder is progressive so I needed to check "progressive" as the source in tmpge, and also deinterlace. this gave me a video file that is 90 as sharp as the original,
now I need to convert the audio, I tried this besweet program, but I cannot figure out how to use it. I get everything set up but there doesnt seem to be any button to click on to execute the conversion. ???????
another method I was thinking was to somehow deinterlace the progressive video in avi format, then run it through the videoconverter program. this would get around the problem that the videoconverter program cannot accept progressive scan.
can someone point me to a good explanation of using this besweet, or perhaps a better program for converting the .wav file to ntsc framerate?
thanks,

I never had any luck with beesweet, it just would not run. I used goldwave and that worked great, but I still have serious trouble when I try to mux them back together. I am playing with different setting in tmpge to try to correct this.
I also tried a program called All in One converter from zealotsoft, and like every other program I tried, it ended up with those horizontal lines where there was movement. I am just giving it the dvd compliant mpeg that my video editing program puts out(pinnacle7) this is the same result I have had with videoconverter and advanced converter. ??? is there something I need to do to the mpe2 file b4 I run it through these programs? deinterlace? I feell like this all in one converter will work, but I am missing a step. -
Those horizontal lines - interlacing - are supposed to be kept if for viewing on TV.
Some remove them (deinterlace) only if the final file is for PC viewing. Even then, it's not necessary if PowerDVD or WinDVD is used.
Have you burned any yet to an RW to test on TV? The first place to test is using PowerDVD. If you see interlacing there, something's wrong. You have to make sure the field order matches the captured source order.
Also, I find that interlacing appears exaggerated in many video editing programs while previewing, but fine and as should be on rendering. There's no place like 127.0.0.1
