Are you looking for just a capture card or a TV Tuner capture card?

  4. I have the Hauppauge WinTV-PVR 250 and it works great for me. The bundled software is another matter...

I have several but the WIN PVR 250 teamed up with SnapStream, gives you the best digital VCR you could want. About 10 minutes every 2 weeks I can choose what I want to record, play when I want and compress to another format all within the same program. Makes some nice MPEG-2 files (The TV Tuner). I De-multiplex the MPEG, Author with IFOEdit and slice/chop/compress if needed with DVD Shrink. I have a great collection of stuff captured this way.

I have compared the recording quality of the Hauppauge PVR directly with the Dazzle DVCII (the german version was called DVD Master) and the DVC II was truely better. The reason for reports about trouble with the DVC II (like from andkiich) is caused by the fact that the DVC II is quite particular about the processor and possibly even the chipset of the mainboard you are using plus possible IRQ conflicts with other components of your system.

I am using the DVC II in a Abit-BE6II-system with an Intel-BX-chipset and a Pentium III 600 MHz and it works absolutely flawless for me. The DVCII does not work at all on an ASUS A7A266 Athlon 1200 MHz-system! This system even cannot boot at all as long as the DVCII is installed. For time-pre-programmed recordings I use TWNH.exe. The resulting MPEG2-files can be converted to DivX or authored to SVCD or DVD without any problems at all.

Another vote for the Dazzle DVC II. I use mine in a dedicated video capture/DVD authoring computer. This computer is based around an Intel P4 cpu. Everything I read made me avoid any AMD based solution, most particularly anything involving a VIA chipset.

I use the Bugsy software to do timed captures from DirectTV, then use Womble Mpeg2Vcr to trim the front and back, and then import directly into Ulead DVD Movie Factory 2 with no conversion necessary.

    Hallo henry_nettles,

what is the "Bugsy software" you are referring to? Is it freeware software like TWNH.exe? Do you have a link to it in case it can be downloaded from the web?

Schmendrick apparently you don't know about SPAWNS Unofficial DVC-II WebSite. It's a site created by a DVC-II user and has useful information on how to solve some of the problems people have with the DVC-II. The link for the BUGSY software mentioned is posted there. Also there is a link if you scroll down on the main page to a ftp site that you can download Moviestar 4.25. This version was not officially released by Dazzle on their website. Dazzle used to have a special link that they would give out to some people who had problems that tech support couldn't solve. Of course we all know that Dazzle tech support would probably be rated the bottom of the barrel by most people who tried talking to them. Please note that you will need a ftp program like bulletproof ftp to download Moviestar 4.25. The link to Spawns website is listed below.

Anything that is particular about the motherboard or the processor
is no good. The designers haven't read all the timing specs.

    @ Foo:
You are absolutely right!! But nevertheless the caputure quality of the DVCII is excellent. The reason I bought it was that in Germany it was advertised by the combined brand names: "Fast/Dazzle" and the former german video-company Fast was known for good products. So therefore I had assumed that it was developed by them.

    @ KTH:

Thank you for the link! I was not aware of spawn's Web site.

    It's cool, Bro!

Over 100 successful real time MPEG2 DVD capture and burns from SatelliteTV!

Many thanks to Spawn's Site and TWNH! (I found it a few months ago myself)

For all you MPEG2 capture freaks out there, I gave up on bitrate calculations and now capture at 7000-8000 MBT and Author with TMPGNC and then use DVDShrink to shrink the Authored files to a perfect fit on a DVD, takes an extra few minutes but the DVD gets filled perfectly.

Got hold of a Navis Pro from ebay. This is an old mpeg hardware card but still works under xp. It was unpopular because the software is fixed to 4,6,8,and 10mps. However it will work with other software and captures great quality. I was waiting for ADVC to come along, but am delighted with this card.

You may also want to take a look at the Canopus MPEG Pro (both external and internal) and the Matrox RTX.1000 for MPEG hardware. Way too far out of my price range, but they've been suggested to me by a few pros.
