I really can`t say I have a serious problem as most of my movies turn out great......DVD to VCD..............but occasionally I will do a movie and it has lines running through it...............the sound and picture would be perfect other than these.............does anyone else have this problem or does anyone know what would cause this....your advice would be greatly appreciated...............................Marianne

If they are horizontal lines they are most likely due to interlacing (lower and upper fields together produces this).....when viewing the MPEGS that are to be burnt on VCDS etc on ur computer the lines will be very visible, but once on TV they are hard to notice.
There is no way around this, but you can deinterlace if you want (use Vdub for avis). Video files should be left interlaced when being viewed on TV. If you capture above 352x288 (i think) these lines will always appear. -
Thanks for a quick response...but i`m not quite sure what you mean by `deinterlace`
and yes these lines are hughly noticable on T.V.
I use smart ripper followed by DVDx, and while it`s going through the DVDx motion you can see the lines, so I know it`s going to be a terrible picture and I don`t bother doing it.....Thanks............Marianne
(I do the resolution at 252x288) -
i use dvd2svcd w/ cce for vcd and svcds it allows u to preview the video b4 u start and if u c those lines i just choose 1 of the deinterlace options on the conversion tab, im not to up on the tech and whys about doing this but it works for me thats the main thing and it usually only happens with animated stuff i did

interlace lines appear on encodes of pure ntsc material (like camcorder or many televisions shows) usually anime is just bad telecine material that ends up needing to be deinterlaced because its too messed up to inverse telecine. your quickest bet is the suggestion above and use dvd2svcd. when the material previews with lines then just use telecine(pal) even if your in ntsc land.

A standard VCD should be 352x240 (NTSC) or 352x288 (PAL)
My guess is the problem has to do with the improper resolution you are using. My second guess is that somehow it works if the source is PROGRESSIVE (as most DVD sources seem to be) but when the DVD source is INTERLACED then it gets "mucked up" by the improper resolution since INTERLACED files can be tricky to resize (well at least when using filters and/or "odd" resolutions).

P.S.
Of course I just realized that when you typed 252x288 you merely were making a typo which makes everything I just said totally useless hehehe
Really though you shouldn't have a problem with "lines" through the screen. Are you sure you aren't maybe trying to convert a NTSC source to 352x288 instead of 352x240 or something like that?"The eyes are the first thing that you have to destroy ... because they have seen too many bad things" - Lucio Fulci

Thanks everyone for your help......and yes that was a typing error....and yes everything is set AOK....at first I did only have the lines with some animated movies, but then noticed the occasional (normal) movie would do it too....think I might try the other program you guys suggested....just hope its as easy as the one I use now...thanks again
