  1. I have a Pioneer DV-515. Now over 3 yo. Have just started experimenting with DVD-R's. For a while, movie backups seemed to play fine. Noticed yesterday that after an hour or so, picture would pixlelate, and then a few frames later would freeze in a horrible mess. Turn off player, wait a minute or so, and you can get a little further, but then the same problem. Now, every dvd-r I put in does the same thing, almost instantly. Brand of media is not the issue, have tried 4 x top end super expensive disks. Pressed DVD'd work ok, but have noticed its quite sensitive to scratches and dirt (must have lousy error correction compared to PC DVDROM's) ?

I'd understand if the player didnt play dvd-r's from the start, but fact is , it did .... at leat for a while. All dvd-r's plyback fine in pc dvdroms. Unable to test on another dvd player yet.

Any ideas ? Does heat cause problems with the dvdr substrate making the player read nonsense ? Dust on the lens (not tried cleaning yet) ?

    or

    new player required ?

something tells me from a search that the cause of these problems can be many, but think have eliminated media, labeling.... suspect the player.... does anybody know if a cleaning disk really makes a difference ?

at a guess, i would say the player is struggling.
used to have pioneer 525 which suffered from same problems although the player is recognising the disc it was never designed to play dvd+/-r.
where as more recent players are.
all the discs i had trouble with now play without a hitch on new player

  3. thanks curryman.

so many variables, I feel as though am clutching at straws... but it seems that the simplest solution, albeit also the most costly is just to get another player. So I will go shopping.

can I ask which new player solved your problems ?

was reading the Panasonic F65 or S35 seem pretty good for dvd+/-r....

  4. I own a Panasonic Portable LV-50 DVD Player that plays DVD-R, DVD-RAM and MP3 as stated on the manual. IHAVE THE SAME PROBLEM !!!!
It was working fine with DVD-R for a while and now I am getting the pixalation/blockiness & skipping until it finally shits itself and stops !! It only happens toward the end of movies like the last 4 or so chapters. Have tried different media, same deal. Does not occur with name brand discs like Pioneer & Verbatim, only ones like Ritek, Leadata etc. etc....
It was working fine for a while but has deteriorated over time and the player is only 1 year old. I too am looking for a new player at the moment. Must be a Panasonic thing..........set to self destruct !!!!
