  1. Hey all...

i cant seem to play certain AVI files in quicktime...i can play smaller ones, but bigger ones just wont play. I can use VLC, but not QT... anyway, this leads to me not being able to burn them using Toast 6. i figured out that Toast integrates with QT for previewing movies and stuff...well either way, is there a way to make these AVI files play in QT, or do you think there's a way to make it so that toast integrates with VLC instead?

another question, would it be possible to just stick those AVIs in a VIDEO_TS folder and burn that using galactica's tutorial? let me know...thanx guys.

    EDIT:

quick update, im able to rename the files to .VOB files and they play in VLC...im going to attempt to burn them as the .VOB files. i'll post the results later

Don't do it! It will not work in any DVD player. Try using Divx Doctor from 3ivx.com, or Divx Validator from the earlier divx.com Mac codec releases. Or, you can just use ffmpegX to convert the divx files to whatever you want to make (VCD, SVCD or DVD depending on your divx movie's resolution).

Whoa. You're gonna just put .avi files in a VIDEO_TS folder and try to burn it as a DVD?? That won't work. THey aren't the correct format. VLC may play the files individually because it probably isn't looking at the extention when it play them, it knows from the resource fork that it's a divx file. Your DVD player doesn't work like that. Try opening that same VIDEO_TS folder with Apple DVD Player and see if it works. I'd be willing to bet that it doesn't. You need to convert your .avi files to MPEG-2 before your DVD Player will read it as a DVD.

Are you sure that you have the divx codec installed? Did you run the files through DivxDoctor?

    http://webpages.charter.net/ernsta/DivX(TM)%20Video%205.0%20Alpha%203.sit

download this, unstuffit and there will be DIVX VALIDATOR
just drop your .avi on there and let it do its thing. This will then open in quicktime fully with audio. If it doesnt work in this (or any other) app, then something is wrong with your .avi.

plus, you can have a .avi that plays fine in VLC but wont pass though dvix validator, doctor etc Ive seen that before. And.... you know where those sorts of divx came from.... so you get the idea

  7. i ran DivX validator on the AVIs in question, and it didnt work. then i tried DivX doctor and it said that there was no movie in the error log...any ideas?

also, i put the 3vix extention in the QT library folder, and now all that pops up in QT is a green screen with static at the top.

Did you run Divx Doctor before you installed the extention??

I'd say forget all that divx doctor and validator nonsense, and just install the latest Mac Divx codec from divx.com, available here. That should let you open .avi files in QT without resorting to all those other helper apps.

Open the .avi in QT, get movie properties (Command-J), set the left side popup menu to the video track, and the right side one to 'format', and tell us what it says for the codec.

  13. when the 3vix codec is in the library, next to Data Format it says 3vix D4 4.0.4. however, when the 3vix codec is taken out, it says 'XVID'

    i think i see a solution afoot.

by the way, i just saw kill bill and it's hands down the best movie i've ever seen. please please please go and see it
