  1. i bought 100 disks on ebay from a seller advertising them as the same dye spec as ritek, when i got them they were optodisc ( when i complained this is what i was told:

these are made by optodisc of Tiawan using the
same dye spec (ASO/Cyan) as Ritek/Ridata/Traxdata/MBI/Optodisc which are
    supplied from Japanese manufacturer.
If you test the discs you will find that these are also to grade a standard
and will be as compatible as Ritek / verbatim /TY etc.

is this true as the dye is a light purple not the dark purple i have got from ritek?

Optodisc Gold (and only the gold-topped ones) and Ritek are of the same quality. Not the same disc, but the same quality. I use both of them, and buy whichever is cheaper and/or in stock when I make my purchase.

Both of them have DARK purple dyes.

If you got anything other than a dark purple dye, then they are likely fake Optodiscs at that. Are you sure they are not Opto-somthing else? There are others, many of which are cheapo CMC or Princo.

Sounds like this eBay guy is blowing smoke up your butt. I'd be complaining too. If the seller refuses to cooperate, and you paid via credit card or Paypal, file a complaint with the credit card issuer and/or Paypal.

Post the auction link. Let's see if you missed something.

No. Optodisc doesn't use light dyes. At least none that I've seen. The gold ones are gold branded on top and dark purple on bottom.

If it says "Optodisk" then it's not an Optodisc.

  5. just got this email from him:

The dye isn't dark purple its cyan, the Ritek G03 disc only look darker as
the bonding protection layer is tinted Blue, the GO4 ritek now uses a
lighter blue making then not as dark as the 1X, Ritek / Optodisc /
GigaStorage / Traxdata / Ridata / MBI are all using the same organic dye
materials purchased from same manufacturer in Japan, this are mixed to spec
    ISO 9002 Certified (ASO/Cyan) spec.

Ritek used to be the only user of this spec of dye, but now this year there
    are 8 using this spec.

IThe 4 X speed opto disc are slightly darker looking purple (using tinted
protection layer) these are also using same Go4 dye spec, and sell for the
    same price as Ritek.

Have you tried the disc yet, if you do you will see just how good these are.

Unfortunately, you have nothing to complain about. The seller never promised a brand, just "grade A" discs, which means nothing.

The dye spec is for most all DVD-R. He just found a nifty way to drop big names to sucker you in. And you fell for it.

Hell, the guy calls himself "cheapestmedia" and that's exactly what he sold.

Sorry, but you got what you bid on. Nothing you can do. Either use them or resell them. It's only 70 pounds.

Anyway, EBay is not the best place to buy media.

Nope, RiTEK and Optodisc definetly use better dyes as I have never heard of this "blue-tinted" protection layer from any of my sources. Heck, this guy even mentions "Traxdata" and "RiDATA" as actual manufacturers, but these names are actually BRAND names and are owned by RiTEK!!!

    I wouldn't trust this guy.

lordsmurf - I have always had wonderful results with Ritek G03 & G04 on my DVR-105. looking at getting a new spindle soon, would you recommend Optodisc Gold @ $1.13 each over Ritek G04 @ $1.32 each?

That's about a 15% savings, which is good but I'd want to make sure it was equal quality
