First of all, is it possible to flash a U14A (OEM) to a DRU510A (retail)?
[ I realize there was a very similar question about the U10A and someone
hacked the firmware to allow it to become, I believe, a DRU500A. ]
Is there any disadvantage to keeping the U14A or should it be sent back
and replaced with the retail model? Obviously, Sony warranty (and flash)
support would be very helpful.

I was on the firmware page and found a link to a Japanese web site:
http://www.ued.janis.or.jp/~jabawock/down.html
On there I found this in addition to other OEM conversions:
http://isweb44.infoseek.co.jp/computer/type-ive/files/14A to 510A [1.0c].zip
Anyone tried it?
If something goes wrong, how do you return to the old version? -
As I was advised by the vendor, I flashed my DW-U14A into a DRU510A.
I just successfully completed a DVD burn on TDK 2x DVD-R media. I have not had a chance try DVD+R, but so far it seems to be working well.
