My newly installed Athlon 2400+ runs at 52 °C at idle
and 65°C when running at 100%
Is this normal? Will my CPU be damaged.
Its using a standard AMD Heatsink&Fan.

You should be OK. Its a little high, but not outrageously so. I've seen cooler running rigs, but with a standard cooling system, you are about at par.

If you've got the room in your case:

And throw an 80mm ball-bearing fan on top of it. A friend of mine has the 800 and sees far lower temps than the stock HSF (of course). Plus the stock HSF can be a bit noisy, a good 80mm fan would be quieter. -
According to AMD's Technical FAQ, the maximum operating temperature for an Athlon varies from 85 deg. C to 95 deg. C depending on the model, and "normal" operating temperatures are usually 65 deg. C or lower. "Normal" operating temperatures will of course very from system to system depending on case size, air flow, heatsink, etc., etc., but it sounds like you don't have anything to worry about.
