  1. I just bought a Liteon 2001 player which plays DivX 3, 4 & 5 and also XviD. I have a film which I burned to CD to watch, but the player says that the audio or video is not compatible (it does not give any further details). I'm not in a position to check the film with GSpot at the moment, but is there a way to convert the film (as it's already an AVI) to another AVI with a codec compatible with the player?

I wonder if this can be done quickly or even cheat a bit (change the 4CC?), or is it likely to be a case of converting taking several hours as in AVI -> MPEG2 with TMPGEnc or similar?

If it's the audio which has the problem, I guess I could strip the audio, convert it to a compatible codec and then remux?

    Thanks

    Hmm,

Making some assumptions about the source of your avi (I don't want to know) it seems that any of the DivX / XVid codecs should cope so it is probably an audio problem. Try demuxing the audio, converting whatever it is (lay a £5 bet its WMV or maybe OGG) to MP3 and remuxing. Then try. If that fails then it is likely to be a video problem. You could also try stripping the audio and burning just the video part to see if that plays ok, that might help nail down the problem.

Avoid AVI -> AVI conversion if possible, you'll lose quality.

    Good luck,

you can open the file with Virtualdub, under Video->Compression select whatever codec you'd like, and save the file.

Vdub is probably going to be the fastest reencode, short of a cheat or header rewrite.

  4. Thanks for all the replies guys. I checked it with GSpot and the video codec is XviD and the audio is MP3, both supported by the player. I don't use the XviD codec on the PC but the ffdshow filter. This renders all Xvid stuff OK, but not the two AVI's I have with the problem. It's like the changed parts are not redrawn properly, the whole picture (in Media Player) is very blocky and unwatchable. Ran the file through DivFix and the output was a different size, so I thought I had bad frames. Burned this output to another disk and it still won't play.

Will try some of the other methods.

It plays some DivX 3/4/5 and XviD, not all. Not by a long shot. Doesn't do Q-Pel, as well as other advanced functions.

I would try a 4cc header re-write. The fact that it won't play at all is a clue. It should play, but poorly or distorted if it's some type of MPEG4.

Also, make sure your video is any good. DivFix is a great way to ruin a file. It let's you play what you got but.......

Try doing a 1 minute test clip with PCM audio instead, that will rule out your audio being the problem. As to the video, you can re-encode it, but it will look pretty bad.

Another thing to check is the video resolution. Remember you takeing a progressive image and displaying it on an interlaced source. If you have an odd resolution (which never happens with mpeg4's) it may not be able to render it. Along the same lines, your going to have issues with a 25 fps (PAL) AVI.

  6. Tried the header rewrite, it tried to play it but kept flashing chapter 1 on the display as if the movie was playing but you're repeatedly pressing the skip back button.

For anyone with this player, Liteon have just posted new firmware (v0229) on their site. There isn't any details on what's updated, so I emailed. This is the reply:

In this Version 0229 we only focus on improvement of the display quality of the images.

And there will be another firmware release maybe at the middle of the OCT.

Please check our website http://www.liteonit.com.tw/DC/english/csd.htm for the latest firmware
    update.

Thanks for everyones help, I just guess I won't be able to watch these two films. At least all the others (5) I have tried do work.
