I have two 80 minute DVD-RWs I edited with Pinnacle Studio 7, converted to MPEG2 with tmpGENC (audio with tooLAME), and burned with Ulead DVD Movie Factory 2. I can make an image and burn that to another DVD-RW, but not to a DVD-R. They both have trouble at 92% copying from hard drive to DVD-R. I no longer have the mpegs - I didn't think copying unprotected disks would be a problem. Any help greatly appreciated.

I'm thinking it's your DVD-R media. There is no other reason for this. The files are digital files and if they work on RW's but not on R's it can only be one thing.... If the files were somehow corrupted they wouldn't work on either.
Oh wait, just noticed you said you were burning from an image,
The only other thing I could think it might possible be is your image file is fragmented. Check your drive fragmentation and see if it tells you that you need to defrag.. It's a big strech but maybe possible."Terminated!" :firing: -
Have you tried just using Stomp and just copying the DVD RW to the DVD R, remember to use the same drive for source and destination.
-
If it fails at 92% I'm willing to bet dimes to dollars it's the media.

Could someone explain how you get a 80minute dvd-rw? Are you sure we aren't talking cd-rw here? Perhaps he's trying to write a 80min cd-rw to a 74min cdr.

Thanks for all the quick responses, I appreciate it.
I tried Stomp (assumed you meant RecordNow Max?), the trial download, and got a fail around roughly the same spot. But my settop player wouldn't read it at all - I got a 'dirty disk' message.
When I started this, I bought 4 Memorex spindles of 10 disks each. I was using Ulead DVD MF2 to burn the project, had made 11 perfect burns when 2 disks in a row failed. I reinstalled my whole system and bought a copy program (PIC). I tried a blank disk from each of the spindles I bought - no luck.
I'll try a different brand, but they were working fine with MF2, so I don't think that's it. Of course, I was burning a project then, not copying as I'm trying to do now. Thanks again to all.

What Burner are u using. I had problems with Memorex on my Sony DW-U10A failing at around 90%. I no longer use them.

Download Daemon Tools from www.doom9.net.
After you rip your DVD into an image file, load it into Daemon Tools and play the DVD. Just to see which side of the tracks you are working on. If the DVD plays fine from it's ISO file then your rip is good and the problem is on the re-burn end.
My guess would be that your rip is bad or like everyone else said, bad media. But if your 80 minute DVD will play fine all the way through on the RW disc then there is no reason why you can't rip it from there.
Someone else suggested that maybe your image file is fragmented...this is also a possibility, over fragmentation will lead to "timeout" errors sometimes. My only other question would be when you rip the DVD are you ripping it to a RAID array?
Back to the question...
If the video plays fine from it's ISO file then the rip is fine. What I would do if I still couldn't get it to burn right, is load the ISO into Daemon tools then rip the DVD from my virtual DVD drive using Decrypter. I would rip in file mode however not ISO>read mode. Once ripped, you can play the ripped DVD in WinDVD or PowerDVD straight from the VIDEO_TS file. Again if it plays fine all the way through then I would use IMGtools...(available at doom9 also) to create an image file of the VIDEO_TS folder and burn from there.
This might be a teadious process but you need to start narrowing down where the problem is, I mean if it's in the rip then you don't want to spend a bunch of time screwing around with the burn end of it. And if it's bad media then quit being so cheap, use Ritek's.
Also try DVD Decrypter for ripping and burning, it's not 100% necessary but Decrypter is pretty good. -
Thanks again folks for so much help. I dl'd DVDinfo and found that my Memorex DVD-Rs are CMC (sux) and my Memorex DVD-RWs are Ritek (good, usually). I'll try some different discs and see. A lot of people have apparently had trouble burning some discs past the 3.8 to 4.0 gb level.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I always defrag before burning and all my disk images play fine. So hopefully it's media compatibility. And hopefully I can return these to CompUSA.

Have you tried copying the VIDEO_TS folder to your HDD, then simply creating another dvd-r using (whatever you use to burn)?
Copying back to the hard drive is quicker than creating an image.

Ba-da-bing! I increased the write cache on Pinnacle Instant Copy and now I have no problem making any kind of copies at all. I noticed that it was set at or near the data size that I was getting failures, so I set it to the max size and everything went perfect.

Okay, I made about 15 DVDs and now I'm having problems again. The Memorex disks were burning fine, then I got failure after failure at that same 92% mark. A Sony disk failed on me at 29%, the first time I got a failure at a diferent spot in the burning process. Just wanted to follow this up for accuracy's sake.

Up till now I have had great sucess with Nero 5.5 using DVD Video template but I am having some bizarre burn failures with Nero 5.5 at the moment. I also get the same failures using Record now, Image tools and DVD Decrypter.
I can only burn a disc successfully if I run it through simulation mode first (x4) and even then it may fail on the burn stage. I usually use Datawrite yellow tops, have also tried Princo white tops.
The drive will write to a -rw with no failures.
I have two hard drives on the same ide channel, and my writer and dvd-rom on the other. I also have a cd-writer on a external enclosure. My dvd writer jumper is on cable select (It has been on that setting since February 2003). I installed the second hard drive just a couple of weeks ago. That's when the problems started. Since then I have tried burning with the second drive disconnected and not present on the hardware set-up.
I have defragmented both hard drives, un-installed the drives and re-booted etc, but still get failures.
The really weird thing is, I can burn 100% no problems with Copy2dvd
I have done a full system recovery but still no success with Nero. The drive will burn a cd no failures.
I think it is a hardware issue, but I will be buggered if I can trace it. -
It is definitely your media- Memorex DVD-RW(ProDisc) and the Memorex DVD-Ram have a known defect and have supposedly been recalled by memorex.

Thank you for choosing Memorex.

Sounds like your DVDROM drive ahs kicked you IDE speed down. IDE's only go as fast as the slowest device on the cable. Try removing the rom drive and see if your still making coasters. RW's are more forgiving.

Per recommendations here, I bought some Ritek G03 disks from Meritline.com for just over a buck each. I burned 13 of 16 successfully and they all played in my friends' DVD machines. At that price, the occasional coaster wasn't nearly so aggravating.
