Disc Read's

Good Morning to All,
First, I finally broke down and bought a DVD writer. I purchased the Sony DRU-510A firmware rev c.
So far it works flawlessly. I have managed to write to both +R/RW and -R/RW. Save one exception. My standalone DVD player will play -R/RW and +RW perfectly. However, it will not even recognize any +R disc. I would have thought that if it would read the +RW disc it certainly ought to read the +R disc but alas not to be.

Does anyone have any idea why this is the case?

RW discs have different properties to R discs, and they in turn are different to pressed discs. Try a different manufacturer and see what happens, if it still doesn't work with +R but you can use -R, when it comes to video then why not go with that ?

I'm a -R man, predominantly for video, so the slightly faster write and better error correction isn't an issue for me.

Just thought that it was odd that the player would read +RW just fine but could not read the +R. It reads the -R and -RW just fine. For me the speed isn't a big issue. And since they cost all around the same price. TDK on sale was 25 for $39. I picked up on sale some Memorex, 10 for $19. So price isn't an overwhelming concern. I will most likely use the +R for data storage and the -R for video.

Just thought it was odd and was looking for others insight or experiences. Never know, it could be that I was just not holding my mouth right was what was wrong. >

Get the same feeling myself sometimes. Gotta love technology. Almost needs a witchdoctor to bless it daily for fear that the techno-gremlins get to you.

The thing to remember is the rewritable media is manufactured differently to "conventional" recordables. As you will see from some of the other posts in the forums, even batches from the same manufacturer can be different, and the DVD Video specification only says that a player has to be able to handle pressed discs.

Therefore, I always suggest people are thankful if their player handles CD's CD-R's, any form of recordable DVD... because the spec doesn't make the manufacturer of the players implement any of those by default.

Although the recorder writes the same data to a disc (ignoring the copy management bit that +R supports but +RW does not, of course), a +RW disc and a +R will "appear" different to a DVD player. It's a bit like putting on a pair of sunglasses. You should see everything as clearly when you put them on (allbeit a bit darker, of course !), but if you've got a cheap pair it might distort, making it difficult for you to focus.

The DVD player does not "see" in the same way you do, but the principle is the same. Some players don't like certain media and variants of that media because they exhibit different properties when it comes to reflectivity, plus of course some players are simply more tolerant than others.
