From what I have seen here so far I get the impression that to get the highest quality video from a vhs to dvd I should capture the video to an avi file using the "huffy" codec then encode that to an mpeg2 with TMPGenc. (I havent seen mention of Uleads video studio which can capture direct to mpg2, does it do a good job?).
At this point, how do I get the IFO, BUP & VOB files in order to create the dvd? As mentioned Im willing to sacrifice time for high quality, my hardware should be sufficient...Im using P4 2gig machine with 512 Ram & 80 gig drive. Also using my Geforce Ti4200 graphics card for capturing which seems to work fine so far.
Thanks for any suggestions.

I suggest you get the VideoStudio and try it direct to MPEG2.
I use the ATI which capture to MPEG2 and it is more than adequate
for VHS. I'm not sure about VS7 , The ATI has hardware assist.
Caturing to AVI with Huffyuv is better , but a VHS tape just doesn't
have enough quality to make it worth the trouble usually.
You will get all kinds of opinions on that , but ultimately you should
try it both ways and see what YOU think.
oh and once you have a nice MPEG2 , you make all the VOBs etc
with MovieFactory2 , TMPGenc DVDauthor, DVDlab, Ifoedit etc.
