Does it have any sense to save captured AVIs as ZIP files on a CD or DVD for encoding with, on this moment, non existing encoders in the future?

Zipping video files does not work well (will not reduce filesize), think about it, you have already compressed the file using a video codec, divx xvid etc. So if you want to archive just save the avi file to disc there is no point in zipping it.

Craig,
Thanks for your reply.
I meant not compressed AVIs, these are capture files captured with DVIO (13GB/hour) from VHS via Canopus ADVC.
I also made DVDs (mpeg2) from these files.
But I thought: there will be development in encoders in the future.
So when I save the uncompressed AVIs compressed to ZIP, I can secure the source for future encoding. -
Oh right, I still don't think you will get much compression by zipping it (DV is still compressed video), but you could always try and see. I find the best method of archiving is to keep the DV tape.
