ive just been looking at this card, it retails at a about £400 but i got the chance to get a rarely used one for just under half the price.
though the new retail version come with adobe premiere 6.5, the version i have available to buy only has adobe premiere 5.0.
is there any difference in the hardware capabilites in the card, or is it just the same card with different versions of premiere?
and i if i loaded premiere 5.0, then upgraded, will i still be able to use all the cards features that it is capable of?
secondly, when you capture with this card, there is the option to export it.
apparently, it takes the same time as the captured file to produce the mpg stream, is this right ? or does it take the "encoding time" of tmpgenc?

UPDATE
i found out the version of premiere will be 6.0, but i would still like to know if all the features were to work if i upgraded to 6.5.
though i still need replies for the second question...
"secondly, when you capture with this card, there is the option to export it.
apparently, it takes the same time as the captured file to produce the mpg stream, is this right ? or does it take the "encoding time" of tmpgenc ?"
thanks

While I don't have one of these cards I have been looking hard at it
It seems that you "capture" in DV, make your editing changes and apply transitions and effects (some hardware rendered) and when you are happy you can export to MPEG using hardware real-time mpeg compression.
Being hardware I don't think you get multi-pass encoding and I understand the VBR settings are pretty simple as well.
I'm not too certain about the rest though - hopefully somebody can confirm this. -
The card is the same all you need is the updated drivers from Pinnacle which will make it a DV 500 DVD, driver version 4.5 (make sure its a plus and not just a DV500)
I bought this card....and then sold it...its not all that. You only get some realtime features. The capture quality from VHS to AVI was not all that infact I get similar results with a card that cost far far less (Hauppauge WintTv Go)...did not get a chance to try DV capture.
The fact is it has some realtime transitions but if you are not gonna use transitions...this card is a waste of money.
You only get realtime up to two tracks...Personally I only edit and output to Mpeg 2 so I could do everything without this card... -

if anyone else can help...
i can get this card for about £100 (UK), so the price isnt really a issue.
i already have a hauppauge wintv fm, so i want to try something different, and the dv500 looks good.
one thing i am still unsure about is what is meant when the captured files are "exported" from premiere.
- does this mean that the files are exported to be encoded?(if so, is the encoding faster than tmpgenc?)
- or are the files captured in realtime?
im looking to get something new this week. my other option choices are the canopus advc-100 and the hauppauge pvr-350.
info would be much appreiciated

I have used the DV500 for about 1 and a half years now. I am happy with it but by no means does that mean it does not have issues. If I was buying a realtime card today I would get the Matrox 100. I never export using premiere. I have found that Pinnacle mpeg2 exporter, stinks to be frank. Adobe encoder is a little better but not as good as Tmpegenc or Canapos ProCoder which is what I use. Also keep in mind that realtime refers to editing not exporting. Also premiere transitions are not realtime only pinnacle and only the DV500 transitions not hollywood fx transitions. But all in all I like it.
