I don't have a RW capable standalone so I cannot burn to a RW for testing. Before I burned directly to a DVDR I would like to confirm that a dvd compliant m2v file plus an ac3 2-channel or an mp2 or LPCM file or even a mixture of different sound formats of the above, can be played in a standalone even without a decoder amp. I believe that the dvd standalone (without a decoder) can downmixed the different sounds to stereo or pcm for playback. Am I correct? I could be wrong. Second opinion?

AFAIK, it is a requirement for all DVD players to be able to read Ac3 audio upto 5.1 channels and downmix to stereo and output a suitable analog signal. Also. LPCM audio support is required.
So what you are saying is correct w.r.t Ac3 and LPCM. Mp2 support is only a requirement in Europe, and some Americane players do not support it all (though not many from what I read/see on here). -
the mp2 requirement was dropped in europe now ... it is now just an option ..
world wide the requirements are the same for audio .."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
I didn't realize that, was that recently as I have been giving the same info for months and only just been told it was wrong!Originally Posted by BJ_M

yes -- fairly recent .. i was saying the same thing also .. but it was changed (ac3 was an option before also)..Originally Posted by bugster
it made sense since ac3 was on every disk anyway ...."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
OUCH,
That means that all the home movies I have made with MP2 will slowly become unplayable as time goes on.
Guess I better start encoding AC3 from now on.Just what is this reality thing anyway? -
i wouldnt worry to much ---- MOST (but not all) dvd players still play mp2 just fine and some authoring apps only do mp2 (or pcm) anyway ..
