I am trying to convert a xvid with ac3 avi file to vcd. I have extracted the audio file with virtualdub, direct stream. The original file is 697mb, the audio file is after I extracted it is only 231mb. I have then tried to convert to a wav file in headac3he but it won't convert keep getting error message. I have tried everything, please what I am doing wrong? or is their a error in the file?

Have you tried ac3fix.exe. Run your ac3 file through this first, as vdub adds a wav header.

Another option, if you have an Ac3 codec installed, is to open the avifile in goldwave (shareware), and save out the audio as a wav file from there.

  3. Thans Bugster for all your help, I am still having problems.

I tried goldwave didn't work, all I got was a screeching sound.

I put the file back through Virtualdub, this is what the file information says:

    Audio Stream
    Sampling rate: 48000Hz
    Channels: 5(stereo)
    sample precision: n/a
    compression: unknown (tag2000)
    Layout: 103955 chunks (0.50s preload)
    Length: 242826525 samples (1:12:16.18)
    Min/avg/max/total frame size 909/2335/28000/(237136K)
Data rate: 448 kbps (1.02% overhead)

I then tried using Ac3fix but I don't think I can get that program to work, it flashes up on the screen and then disappears.

I then put the file into headac3he and this is the error message I recevied:

Bad Syncword at frame 10186! AC3 stream is probably corrupt.

I don't know what to do. What do you suggest is wrong?
By the way the file plays fine on my computer, picture and sound are great.

  4. As to why Goldwave doesn't work, You need the directshow Ac3filter installed, which I don't think you have. Find it in the tools section.

Ac3fix.exe is a command line program. Do a forum search for instructions if you are not familiar with the command line, I and others have explained it many times so you should be able to find waht you need.

If Frame 10186 is the last frame (Headac3he shows start and end frame numbers), just reduce the end frame number by 1.

  5. Thanks again Bugster,

I did manage to get ac3fix to work and converted the file into wav, I then encoded it with tmpenc. Now the problem is no sound at all. When I was converting the file with headac3he I noticed that in the log, it has CRC ERRORS everywhere what does that mean? What have I done wrong now?

  6. Strange, you shouldn't get CRC errors after using ac3fix. Does the converted wav have sound before encoding? Have you re-tried the goldwave method with the ac3filter I mentioned.

  7. Yes the ac3 file had sound before I fixed it with ac3fix. the fixed file has no sound. I did download ac3filter, but it hasn't made any difference, I am not sure how I am supposed to use it with goldwave, wav files from goldwave still have screeching sound.

The file I am trying to convert is an XviD-CFH, I don't know if that makes any difference.

  8. Can someone please help me, I still can't convert this file to vcd. I don't know what the problem is. In the file information in Virtualdub, it says that the layout is 103955 chunks (0.50s preload). I think its supposed to say samples not chunks, could this be the problem. I am really stuck on this one.
