  1. Concerning the LG ELECTRONICS GSA-4040BI:

I've seen more postings about the 4040B DVD writer than the 4040BI.
Is one more popular and better than the other? Is it a misstype by retailers?
It's a good priced burner, I would have boughten it by now if it wasn't for the confusion.
Any other recommendations for a burner? I don't want to look hard for compatible media.
    Thanks.

The "I" is most likely a misprint by the resellers, I've only seen the "4040B" on the LG website.

I have the drive and I like it a lot, it's rather inexpensive, it's quiet and fast as long as you find media that is compatible with the firmware on the drive. When I mean compatible I mean that it will still burn, but not at the speed printed on the label.

  3. I think I read somewhere that "BI" designates the retail version of the drive. I bought an OEM version, the model number on the drive is 4040B. It came with software, audio cable, manual (more like pamphlet) but no media. I believe the retail drive package includesc a DVD-RAM disk, maybe also others.
I like mine so far, but I haven't done much with it yet.

  4. I have the retail version of this drive compete with dvd-ram media and it's a 4040B.

Haven't used the drive all that much yet either but i have noticed that my average cd-burning write speed is somewhere between 12-14X even thought the drive is rated at 24X. Looks like choice of media and firmware version are important factors.

If you go to Lg's site here and scroll to the bottom of the page it shows you:
