  1. I have a new DMR-E30 recorder. I was hoping to transfer old VHS family movies to DVD and make copies for family members. I had been planning on doing this with VCD and bought all family members an APEX AD-1110W for Christmas. I now discover the AD-1110W can not read the DVD-R's the Panasonic creates.

Reading message threads, it sounds like the only option available now is to add a DVD-RAM/DVD-R drive to my PC, copy the DVD-RAM contents to my PC and burn a new DVD.

It appears a Panasonic or LG GMA-4040B should allow me to read the DVD-RAM and burn a more compatible DVD-R. I am running XP and have Pinnacle Studio 8. I have had good luck in the past with LG CD drives, and am leaning towards the LG drive.

    Questions:

    1. If I archive to DVD-RAM from the DMR-E30, is the DVD-RAM format standardized such that most any DVD-RAM drive will read the disc created in the DMR-E30?

    2. Should I expect the LG GMA-4040B to produce a DVD-R that can be played on the APEX AD-1110W?

    3. Are there any options I am missing to make the above hardware work together?

    Thanks in advance,

    Dave

  2. I have the e-20 and the 1110W and you are right about it not reading the dvd's that come out of the panny. Look for a user by the name of donpedro or a search for the e20 (or e-20). There are a few posts that talk about "correcting" this issue.

The end story is that you will need to use a DVD-R (or a ram) for the initial run through and then convert or pull into an app like movie factory 2 to do the rest.

    Sucks, doesnt it 8)

    Hey-

I have the DMR-HS2 and the LG 4040B.

    1) The LG 4040B "Super" drive will read disks created on my HS2, no problems.

    2) Yes, you should expect it, 90% sure it will work.

    3) Not that I can think of. I have used Memorex & Panasonic DVD-RAM successfully. I read there is a problem with TDK DVD-RAM.

Something you should know about the burner though. When burning 4x DVD-R, the burner is sensitive to the brand of media and may only burn at 2x. I haven't tested this, its just from what I have read. I burn all my video at 2x anyways. Overall I am very happy with the Super drive.

Do you intend to edit on the Panasonic with DVD-RAM?

BTW I am a fan of Pinnacle Studio version 8 for home video, but I am not sure if it is going to be big help with this. You can try it (see my link in signature) but I would not expect too much. It is all-in-one sofware. For this task you might need something specificaly for Authoring only. Don;t forget that Panasonic makes AC-3 sound

  6. I have an E50 and in my PC a Toshiba SD1217 (or something like that), anyway..its a DVD-Rom drive that can also read DVD-Ram, you have to use non-cartridge or take em out of cartridge first though.

What i do is put in Ram disc, copy .VRO file to hard drive and then rename it .VOB, you are then free to de-multiplex, use it in DVD authoring software, etc.

  7. Thanks to all for the help.

I decided to go with the 4040B. I have burned a DVD with the 4040B to Sony DMR47L1 media (-R) using camcorder source and Sudio 8. It worked fine in the Apex 1110W. Next step is to try DVD-RAM created on the DMR-E30. I have a bit more research to do on how to pull this off, but now that I have hardware and media that seems to work together, it is just a matter of finding the right sofware.

    Thanks again,

    Dave
