If you're gonna play it on the computer, why make a VCD at all?
The MPEG used as source to create a VCD isn't used "as is", but some headers are added, and it's then stored on the CD-R under a standardized name, AVSEQnn.DAT

Neither WMP nor (afaik) Real Player is a VCD player. For computer playback of VCD, use PowerDVD or WinDVD, or take your pick among the VCD players listed under TOOLS

  3. I'm making a vcd so I can play on another computer.

Should the vcd work automatically in a vcd enabled dvd player, or do you have to change the format??

  4. You can play a .dat file with WIndows Media Player, but make SURE it is a VCD not an SVCD. .DAT files are, I think universally compatible IF you choose Windows Media Player to open them with. Well the oldest one I've tried is a 5 year old friends computer, kinda slow but the movie worked perfect.

I use Windows Media Player 6.4 for VCD Playing, and PowerDVD For SVCD Payback.

  6. I download I-VCD and it went through the installation process, but when it gets to 100% it gets stuvk. Then I tried re-installing it and it says "ERROR INSTALLING IKERNAL.EXE". When I tried running it from program files it comes up with illegal operation which says:

"I-VCDP caused an invalid page fault in
    module MSDXM.OCX at 0187:1d3514dc."

    What is wrong?

Can you recommend another VCD PLAYER that plays AVSEQ files(I mean .DAT files)???

  7. Windows MEDIA PLAYER 6.4...just open the .dat file in Windows Media Player, see if it works...

  8. For playback on a PC only, just make a CD-ROM with the mpeg file on it. It will play on any PC or MAC using the default media player.

A VCD is a special formatted disk made for DVD and VCD players. (and as noted above, Media player will play the .DAT file just fine, you just need to tell it to use the Media Player).

  9. Hey thanx for that. It never worked before but it does work. I just wish I could get the autorun to WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER but I don't think that works.

Its probably best not to have autorun as I will be using the VCD on another computer soon. Its just a shame my cool menu I created goes to waste.

    @ BanLai
During the authoring process (the creation of a VCD from a MPG) the mpeg gets some additional headers, and gets a new extension, .dat
To author, you use some authoring application, most notably VCDEasy (for VCD and SVCD), that you feed your compliant mpeg.
